For Sharleen Heist, photography began as a hobby and quickly became a passion. A gift from her husband, she received first camera because she wanted to take better pictures of her children. I don’t think he knew what he was starting!
Sharleen’s first camera used film and as a result she would carefully consider every picture she took. My pictures although good, were predictable. Switching to digital has enabled her to explore new techniques and perspectives. Her work is constantly evolving, that’s what keeps her hooked. She loves a good challenge and photography always seems to provide her with one.
I have always been infatuated with color, texture and detail. Nature is filled with these things and for me is a constant source of inspiration. It may be the color of something that pops out at me or the way the light causes it to glow or even the shape of something that pulls me toward it. Nature is constantly changing and therefore is always offering something new to notice. I like that photography enables me to stop and really see these subtle details and changes.
I also find inspiration in vintage items. Again, it goes back to color and texture for me. The look of weathered wood, the patina of a metal platter or a vintage paint color that you don’t see used anymore, these things intrigue me and make me want to capture their beauty. They also play well with nature. Flowers always look better in an old milk bottle or hobnail vase!
My hands-down favorite experience in my profession is watching the reaction people have to my images. Often times there will be two reactions. The initial reaction is more general, they see the image are drawn to it and will comment on it. The second reaction comes after they have taken a moment to look closely at the image. This reaction is usually one of piqued interest. That’s the reaction I like. I know I’ve done my job when I get the second reaction.
Sharleen loves the idea of using photos in unique and unexpected ways. She also loves to craft with her hands. Right now she offers photo pendants and blocks and plans on expanding this line of photo crafts to include journals, postcards, tags, tote bags and whatever else she can dream up. She would also like to write tutorials on photography and photo crafting.
I have learned so much from others and feel sharing my knowledge would be a way to pay it forward.
