DOORMAT | January 22, 2009

Every woman in the country is socialized to act like a doormat. It doesn’t have to be that way! There is a way to learn to say “No,” and that even the biggest doormat can change her ways. Here’s some advice to cure the disease to please.

Find time for yourself
Schedule time away from your job, your partner and your children. Use this opportunity to tune in to what you want and need. Don’t feel that you’re being selfish; you have a responsibility to yourself to take care of your needs.

Buy time
The next time you’re asked to do something, don’t … Read More »

Girly Graphics From Broken Box Designs | January 22, 2009

I am a huge fan of Wendy Lynn Sefcik, graphic designer and illustrator.  I met Wendy about two years ago.  She designed a darling girl to advertise my boutique, My Chic Things. I own T-shirts, coffee mugs and stationary clad with the special girl she designed for me I recently asked Wendy to tell me about her road to success and about her business, Broken Box Designs.

“Art has always been a passion of mine. I’ve loved drawing since I was very little and knew by about 9th grade that I would pursue art as a career. I got my bachelor’s degree … Read More »

Camping Anyone? | January 22, 2009

Okay, bear with me while I wander down memory lane! We enjoyed our 10th Annual trip to Silver Creek Plunge this past summer and  I need to go back a few years to build on what my point is going to be.

I grew up camping, REALLY camping! If it didn’t fit into a backpack and could not be carried into some remote lake then it did not make the trip. Then when we moved to Alaska, camping took on a whole new realm of possibilities. In summer months, there were white water rafting trips, where all the gear was strapped … Read More »

Take Time To Let Kids Help Fix The Situation | January 21, 2009

One thing that is nice about blogging is that it gives us a chance to reflect.  Well today I am reflecting on feeling like a really in-adequate, educational mom.  I have a sneaky suspicion that my daughter’s first grade teacher would love to just slap me up side the head and go “Um HELLO—are you in there Mrs. Castleman?”.

Lindsey is 7 years old and my second daughter.  She is a free spirited kid with little to no desire for school except to socialize and play with the boys (she would actually prefer to be a boy but that is a … Read More »

Please Sir… Can I Have Some More? | January 21, 2009

Looks like a Dickensian Christmas is on the cards for winter 2009, according to the assortment of gentlemanly ragamuffins versus orphaned chimney sweeps on display at Burberry Prorsum this week.  With flat caps, fingerless gloves, and lashings of muted tones, it looks as though the answer to the credit crunch is merely to pick a pocket or two, boys… more gruel anyone?
