There are not many subjects that cause more consternation around here than the age-old question, to match or not match?

Outside of a very traditional decorating style, matching pairs – in lamps, tables, wall art – have always seemed a bit stuffy.  But in recent years, mixing different design looks to reflect a personal taste has become a style all it’s own, and somehow matched pairs become the soothing element that ties it all together.

This bedroom from the upcoming March issue of Traditional Home caught my eye, not for the obvious use of bold color, but for the calming element of symmetry.

The use of the metal bookshelves, really, as bedsides looks great here, despite the unusual height compared to the mattress.  They probably have black marble as the shelves, which ties in nicely with the bed finish.  As a stand alone piece, this bookshelf has a very cold feeling, but in this harsh, but is instead a little whimsical.

The placement of the art is interesting as well as pleasing.  Often with such a high headboard, art above it would be taboo, but with the shapes and placement of the other pieces, it works perfectly.

I love the added detail of the band on the bedskirt, the fabric of which matches the headboard.

Copy this look:
*  coordinating nightstands in a material different from your bed
*  matching lamps that stand out from, and do not fade into, the wall color
*  simple yet classic bed linens with subtle detail
*  incorporate bolder pattern in your window covering or wall art

Hmm, I’m going home to give my bedroom an evaluation; it might be time for some changes!
