I once lived in a circa 1940′s duplex with built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace in the living room. Vexed by the dated feel of the bookcases, I painted the room a warm butter color and filled the bookcases with photos and books and my collections of wicker bottles and antique finials.
Still the bookcases bothered me. One day, inspired by a Ralph Lauren ad, I painted the back wall of the bookcases a fabulous chocolate brown. Instantly they were transformed and the feel totally updated.
