I once lived in a circa 1940′s duplex with built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace in the living room.  Vexed by the dated feel of the bookcases, I painted the room a warm butter color and filled the bookcases with photos and books and my collections of wicker bottles and antique finials.

Still the bookcases bothered me.  One day, inspired by a Ralph Lauren ad, I painted the back wall of the bookcases a fabulous chocolate brown.  Instantly they were transformed and the feel totally updated.

These bookcases probably had doors on the lower cabinets at one time and removing them has not only allowed for practical use, but a more updated look as well.  Here they have painted the inside of the top and bottom sections different colors and the wall color different still.

I like the modern feel of this bookcase painted all over in blue, both inside and out.  Notice that the base of the bookcase is white to carry on the continuity of the baseboard.  The blue in contrast of the ochre color of the walls and window treatments is really lovely and unexpected.  Many combinations would work well – with a little experimentation!

Another way to bring in color is to add it to the inside of a piece of furniture – a bookcase or secretary.  This is a gorgeous blue inside this secretary-turned-bar/liquor cabinet.  Not only does it add warmth to the piece, the glasses and bottles are so much prettier as well.  It’s a great modern twist for an antique cabinet.

In keeping with the style of the piece, this antique French cabinet is papered inside with old letters.  Not only does this add warmth, but it also emphasizes the charm of the glass bowls and white ware stored inside.  The same feel could be achieved using newspaper, or with wallpaper as with the photo pictured below.

A project like brings so much of your style to a piece for a minimum investment in time & materials, so don’t be afraid to experiment!
