Another
week has passed in my life and the lives of my wife and kids as well! I
have been contemplating how, as a father in my home I have a great
influence on my kids but I also spend a vast amount of time away from
them. Who has influence upon them during this time? Who are they directly influenced by, in the world?
We
all have immediate family and extended family through siblings and
parents and grand parents. Each one of these people have unique
interests and talents, as well. What do we all do with these
precious gifts? This is what I have been thinking about? Abilities and
insights and experiences that have been fostered and honed over a
lifetime. These are truly meant to be shared!
It
is my belief that this is one of life’s greatest opportunities for us
all to share a part of ourselves by giving time and passing on skills
and knowledge to the newest generation. I know that this is an absolute
truth because I can see it in our own children’s eyes when they get to
spend time with a Grandfather who shows them how to play a musical
instrument or how to take a piece or ordinary wood and turn it into an
amazing piece of art. Or a Grandmother who teaches her granddaughter
how to sew or recognize a plant and call it by it’s Botanical name. Or
a friend that shows them an Antique toy fire truck or plays a game of
cards with them. Our kids are mentored everyday by all those who we as
parents ultimately surround them with. In that, we have a
responsibility for as long as we can to surround them with loving
people who really care about them.
We
all have a responsibility to mentor the children in each community of
family and friends we live in to the best of our abilities.
I
am truly thankful for our family and friends and hope that we all can
help raise our children together. To have the opportunity to share is
one thing, to actually share is more precious than any kind of material
treasure when it comes to our families and our friends. Today I just
want to say thank you to all the people who mentor my kids with a
loving heart and serve as mentors. That is a phenomenal gift and is as
valuable as the water we drink and the air we breathe.
How do you share with the next generation?
