The menu offers a wide range of flavorful vegan dishes, organic beef, lamb and poultry delicacies. Traditionally, Ethiopian vegetarian dishes are designed for the season of lent therefore, they meet the western standards of vegan food preparation. The cozy interior is modest yet tastefully furnished and accented with modern Ethiopian paintings that create a welcoming ambiance.
The Addis Abeba native, owner Hibist Legesse takes pride in successfully finding ways to give Ethiopian dishes a simpler and healthier flare. “I aspire to change the misconception that Ethiopian food being only for ceremonies,” explains Legesse. She has implemented small yet vital details into the cuisine to create a day-to-day meal to the western audience of Bati. “We are dedicated to serving authentic dishes that possess homemade quality flavors,” explains Legesse.
At Bati, special efforts are placed on maintaining the freshness of the food and not overcooking the produce. “We are prudent not to overcook our vegetables and also refrain from over flavoring our meat dishes in order to preserve their nutritional value,” said Legesse. Bati also serves a traditional drink made of flaxseed.
Bati is named after the region located in the North East of Ethiopia that is famous for a weekly market. The market place in Bati is a bustling crossroads for people of different creed to trade their goods. This market has existed for the past six hundred years but the legend of the region stems from the beauty of the women. Men routinely travel far distances for no other reason than to gaze at Bati’s beauties, in hopes of finding a potential partner.
