SLUG BUGS! Oh yeah…the slug bug game is alive and well and working its way through family cars all over the United States.
A year ago, while on my way with friends to a charity event, I was re-acquainted with this game by their two boys ages 11 and 9. Man I forgot how much fun that game is. A free punch to young children and unruly spouses and all that is needed is to spot that Volkswagen Bug (VW). Well I informed my two girls of this game and it has been “on” ever since.
Do you remember the rules? When you see a VW Bug you call out “Slug Bug (and the color of the car)” and whoever says it first gets to punch a person of their choice! Brutal, but yet so fun. You get to give out 1 hit for a regular bug, 2 hits if it is a convertible, 2 hits for a “vintage” bug and 3 lovely hits for that old-time love—the Slug Bus. And Yes I have seen a slug bus. Alas I was all on my own so I texted 3 “whams” to my friend. Oh and VW dealerships are off limits. Can you imagine the carnage if they weren’t? I must admit the hits are more taps than punches, but hey…that if for each family to decide.
So on your next road trip this holiday season–revive and old family car classic game. Nothing says I Love You like a good punch to the arm. And for those of you who are against the “punch” part of the game. Change it up like my friend Patty does in her family. It is the Slug Bug Hug….awww how sweet. Happy driving!

The VW Bug is a great little vehicle, however, I would not want to be caught driving one simply based on moral standards: http://failedmessiah.typepad.com/failed_messiahcom/2009/09/hitlers-stole-his-iconic-peoples-car-design-from-a-jew.html
