I have had the same discussion, lately, with people about some key pieces that are great for work, as well as easily blended into an outfit for “play” too.
Here are my top 5 key pieces that easily mix and match within any woman’s wardrobe:
Pencil Skirt. You can NEVER go wrong with a pencil skirt. LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!
www.whitehouseblackmarket.com $88.00
Light Wool/Gabardine Dress Pants. I am partial to good ol’ black pants. But, any neutral would work: grey, black, navy, or tan.
Gap.com$54.50
Cardigan. It’s the alternative to the blazer, especially when you are going for a look a little less formal.
www.anntaylor.com $80.00
White Button Down Shirt. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE a classic white shirt. Make sure it fits well! You can never go wrong with a classic like this. It’s a MUST HAVE for everyone! I like a poly/cotton/spandex blend as it has less tendency to wrinkle.
Gap.com $44.00
Sheath Dress. Think back to the days of Jackie O. A simple sheath is ALWAYS in style. It’s a great staple that works on its own, as well as with a cardigan and/or blazer.
Chadwick’s: Women’s Clearance up to 80% Off $49.99
Of course, I could totally add to this list. But, if you could only afford 5 key pieces when looking for a job, starting a job, or just trying to expand your professional wardrobe, these would be the 5 pieces that I would have you purchase. All of the items, listed above, could easily be blended into your existing wardrobe to create professional, business attire. Who knew it could be that simple?
For solutions on HOW to use these key pieces, please feel free to contact me through my website at: www.stylishstepmom.com.
Stay tuned for a future posting that takes these 5 key pieces and infuses them with some style and flair!

This is a wonderful, common sense article about fashion basics. I am really getting a lot of wear out of cardigans now. They are great as a layering piece with the popular scarves and statement necklaces. They are also well paired with the thinner long sleeve tees and turtleneck sweaters available from J Crew, Banana Republic and Victoria’s Secret. Fashion is like cooking in that if you need inspiration you might consult a cook book ~ if you are stuck in a fashion rut, look to catalogs or store displays to see new ways to use accessories or color pairings to shake things up!
