Big Reflection | January 21, 2010

Big frame, big wood, big mirror.  I like the size of this mirror and I like it even more because it’s made from salvaged wood.  Taking old used wood and recycling it into new home furnishings adds style and character to your home.  And it makes your home look lived in.

Next time you go shopping, think twice and help preserve our global environment by choosing products that have been recycled.  So get yourself a recycled mirror so you can enjoy the natural beauty of wood in your home and of course, the natural beauty that’s staring back at you!

Recycled wood … Read More »

Sweet Smelling Jet Setter | January 20, 2010

After being on a plane and jet setting somewhere for hours, the first thing I want to do is take a shower. But, it can be a long time until that happens in some circumstances (by the time you get off the plane, get your luggage and take a cab to your hotel), so I always like to refreshen by brushing my teeth (or at least chewing gum), putting on a little deodorant and some sweet smelling (not overpowering) perfume. Well, this is the one I’ll be taking with me on my next trip. It’s Madagascar Orchid oil perfume, by … Read More »

Winter Supper Blues | January 20, 2010

It seems like this part of the year is just as hectic as the beginning of the school year, or even the holidays. There are meetings, sports, lessons,
gym time, and so on.  It is also miserably cold in some parts of the country, which makes us irritable and we just want to snuggle up in a blanket on the couch after our busy days and let somebody else do the cooking!  These are not the times to order take-out!  It is expensive and not so good for us.

We just need some ideas for dinner that are not so difficult, but satisfying … Read More »

Love in a Waffle House | January 20, 2010

While wasting time one morning last summer, I found myself sitting in a Waffle House having coffee. An unexpected and unusual trip landed me in a booth with a birds-eye view of the whole joint. I felt comfortable in the retro vibe and lured in by the odd aroma of bacon cooking and the lingering smell of cleaning agents.  There was such a somber mood shared by the staff and patrons alike. We were all in one small place and yet completely alone in our own little worlds.

In such a ho hum environment where people go about their morning routine, … Read More »

Resolute Worrier Project | January 20, 2010

I would like to stop worrying. I’m not exactly sure when I crossed the line from non-worrier and graduated to full-fledged worrywart. It certainly wasn’t in high school. It might have started in college when I coped with a roommate who had severe health problems. Or maybe it began when I started wondering about my career during junior year.

Like many problems, worrying just crept into my life. It infiltrated my thought patterns and impacted how I dealt with issues that cropped up – and this is the best part – issues that hadn’t even happened yet. I’m a forward worrier. … Read More »

Beer Cake | January 19, 2010

The beer cake is out of the oven, just in time for the football game. You know how I feel about beer and football. I couldn’t decide what to make this time so I ran a poll. In a flood of votes, the Beer Cake won by a narrow margin.

This is a great cake. Spicy, sweet and dense. Perfect for a cloudy winter day.

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a tube pan. I used my FABU square tube pan. Next cream the butter until soft gradually adding the sugar, creaming until light and fluffy.

Add the … Read More »

Beating the Winter Blues | January 19, 2010

Winter and I don’t agree on anything. I ask for sun, it gives me gray skies. I yearn for tropical climes while the temperatures drop well below freezing. Our communication issues are exacerbated further as snowstorms, freezing rain, and bitter winds drive a wedge between us. Needless to say, by March we aren’t on speaking terms. Thanks winter, thanks very much.

I might have a case of the winter blues, but for many, the repercussions of winter weather are much more severe. According to HealthyOntario.com, 2-3% of Canadians suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Symptoms include depressive mood swings, lethargy, difficulty … Read More »

My Love Affair with the Imagination Movers | January 18, 2010

It’s official: I’m in love.  Did I mention that it’s with a children’s television show and the characters on said television show?  Did I mention that I’m 28 years, 11 months and 29 days old?  (I’m trying to tiptoe around the fact that I’ll be 29 later this week.  Futile.)  Oh yes, there’s a new quartet of men in my life and I’m shouting it from the rooftops (or, from Twitter, at the very least).

For all you parents out there stuck watching Barney on a worn-out VHS tape, I have news for you:  There DOES exist a show that both … Read More »

Winter’s Rough Stuff | January 18, 2010

I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves the whistling of an old radiator heater. It’s a comforting sound that’s reminds me of being a kid, settling into my cozy bed on a chilly New England night, feety PJs in full effect. That whistle meant toasty flow of warm air was on its way.

It’s also a sneaky siren. One that calls your moisture. And whisk! It’s gone.

Let’s face it. Literally. Winter temperatures went down and your skin dried up. Spring isn’t on the horizon for months and your face is a lackluster reminder of scraping ice off windshields and … Read More »

DOORMAT | January 18, 2010

Every woman in the country is socialized to act like a doormat. It doesn’t have to be that way! There is a way to learn to say “No,” and that even the biggest doormat can change her ways. Here’s some advice to cure the disease to please.

Find time for yourself.
Schedule time away from your job, your partner and your children. Use this opportunity to tune in to what you want and need. Don’t feel that you’re being selfish; you have a responsibility to yourself to take care of your needs.

Buy time
The next time you’re asked to do something, don’t answer … Read More »
