One of the perks of owning an online magazine is all the jewelry and apparel lines that I’m introduced to daily. As I discover these talented designers, I find that often I’m looking at their websites with the thought of finding my next signature piece.
Building my wardrobe around signature pieces has really become my way of expressing myself and my style. I build an outfit with the thought that one piece needs to stand out. Whether it’s fabulous shoes, a statement necklace or a surprise pop of color, every outfit has to have one signature piece.
Back in the 80′s, I think my signature piece was my hair. I’m not sure if I was trying to fit in, trying to stand out or if I was just bored. The style, color and cut changed often yet I wore the same boring pair of black jazz shoes every day. I still changed my hair probably more often than I should, but it’s no longer the one thing that stands out about my “look” each day.
In the early 90′s, I had my colors done by a former Miss America. Twenty years later I still use these colors when shopping for signature pieces. These colors definitely help me find the pop of color I’m looking for. If you haven’t done this, I highly recommend it. Christie Ressel, owner of Personal Power Image Consulting would be the perfect person to get you started with your colors. Once you have the color swatches, you will feel much more comfortable identifying your signature pieces.
There is no need to feel that you need thousands of signature pieces in your closet. I recommend starting with one gorgeous scarf. This signature piece can be worn around your neck or tied to your handbag. Then go for a statement necklace. Multiple stands of pearls or a strand of beads highlighting one of your “colors” will dress up a simple tee or blouse.
So next time you are shopping online, strolling the mall or visiting your favorite boutique…think signature piece. Build your wardrobe with these items in mind and you’ll always have things in your wardrobe that make you feel good and look great!
