Learning Disabilities | March 17, 2010

by Jenifer Fox,
Author of Your Child’s Strengths: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

In February 2001, the New York Times published a memorable article about a scientific study by a group of psychologists. The group claimed to have done an “exhaustive” review of Winnie-the-Pooh literature and then catalogued and diagnosed a range of clinical, personality, and psychological disorders among the major characters in the Winnie-the-Pooh books. Their study, called the Pathology in the Hundred Acre Wood: A Neurodevelopmental Perspective on A. A. Milne, was one in which the authors describe the various deficiencies of each character. Pooh, for example, has … Read More »

A New Mrs. Oklahoma International is Crowned! | March 17, 2010

A new Mrs. Oklahoma International was crowned on March 6 at the Stillwater Community Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  Beautiful and accomplished women from around the state competed for the title that would, at the end of the night, be awarded to Stephanie Anello, Mrs. Tulsa 2010.

The difference in the International pageant system is the community service platform focus. Each of the contestants participated in one on one interviews with the judging panel before the evening’s activities began.  Each interview was based upon the contestant’s chosen platform.  “The platform issue is important to who we are,” said Executive Director, Lauri Rottmayer. … Read More »

Going for Gold – Sexy Metallic Eyes | March 17, 2010

Oscar night would have made the Olympic panel proud. The metals of gold, silver and bronze were all represented. The competition was fierce, but with elegance and grace. And the judges had Nikons, not numbers.

Gold-dusted eyes on SJP (my love-hate relationship with her pale yellow Chanel Haute Couture gown was confusing)

Silvery makeup on Kate Winslet’s complementing her pewter YSL (that is if you could see past the reflection on the $2.5 million Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace)

Demi Moore’s metallic bronze glow against her stunning Atelier Versace tiered blush gown (does she age?)

And didn’t the gold statue look gorgeous against the … Read More »

Making School Mornings Run Smoothly | March 16, 2010

When your children have finished their homework after school, ask them to put their folders back into their backpacks so they are ready for the morning.  If your child is allowed to bring a snack to school have them pick out their crackers and put them in the backpack as well.

As your children head up stairs for the night, ask them to “grab” their stuff on the stairs and any items they have left behind downstairs to take up to their rooms.  If they do not “grab” their stuff  you could suggest that it will become your stuff for … Read More »

Santa Ynez Basics | March 16, 2010

Santa Ynez, California has become one of my new favorite obsessions on the west coast. The Santa Ynez Valley is located in northern Santa Barbara County (about a two hour drive north of L.A) and is the heart of Santa Barbara’s Wine Country. If you’ve seen the movie Sideways, then you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Why to Go:
The Santa Ynez Valley has more than 100 wineries which feature some great white and red wines (more than just Pinot Noir- if you saw Sideways, you’ll know what I’m talking about). Even if you are not a wine lover, you’ll enjoy the … Read More »

“Mark” My Words, You Will Love This Stuff | March 16, 2010

My sister recently began selling Avon.  Of course, I wanted to support her, but was not sure how I felt about their products.  I have been a dedicated MAC and Laura Mercier customer for many years and did not want to deviate from the norm.  I am always cautious about switching products due to my super sensitive and unpredictable skin!

As I was browsing around on her site I discovered the Mark. line.  I had heard of the line prior to this, but never had a reason to try it.  The first products I ordered from Mark. were the speedway cover … Read More »

Terranea | March 15, 2010

L.A. is one of my favorite cities, but like all cities, from time to time, you want to venture outside of the hustle and bustle to a more relaxing place. On my last trip to L.A, my family and I got to escape to one of the most serene places…the Terranea Resort. Terranea is a brand new resort (opened just seven months ago) which is located in Rancho Palos Verdes, California (about a 45-minute drive south of L.A.). Terranea Resort is a 102-acre resort which sits right on the Pacific Ocean, so your views from just about everywhere at this … Read More »

My Life So Far (In One Hundred Words) | March 15, 2010

I recently came across an article in a year-old issue of Glamour magazine in which several well-known actresses, authoresses and comediennes summarized the secrets of their success in exactly 100 words.  And although I’m not the hallmark of success, it piqued my interest and made me want to bore you all with 100 of my own words.  (I’ll have to admit, I’m crapping cinder blocks over here.  Can I be THAT SUCCINCT?  Me, with my penchant for dictionaries and big words?!)

Here goes.

Born in Belleville to Bob and Mo.  First child, so grew up as peacekeeper between two younger siblings.  Had … Read More »

Journey Back to Regency England — Land of the Undead!
With more than one million copies in print, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was the surprise publishing phenomenon of 2009. A best seller on three continents, PPZ has been translated into 17 languages and optioned to become a film starring Natalie Portman.

In this terrifying and hilarious prequel, we witness the genesis of the zombie plague in early-nineteenth-century England. Spring 2010 Makeup Trends | March 12, 2010

Christopher’s Trends for Spring/Summer 2010

Shimmer:  After a long, hard winter, it is time to get whimsical.  Don’t be afraid of more shimmer than you are used to.  The key is to pick an eye shadow that is good quality with finely milled mica.  This means it will not look like glitter, but it will luminize the skin and look sophisticated and beautiful.  Cheap makeup tends to look like big clumps of glitter, instead of fine, powder-like shimmery leaflets.  You can also use a product like Saude Pele Radiance Booster to your existing shadow to add extra glow.

Coral lips:  One of … Read More »

L.A. Comfort Food | March 12, 2010

When I typically think of Los Angeles, California, I think of sunshine, beautiful people and healthy food. All of this seems to be true, but let me tell you, the people of Los Angeles also know a thing or two about fast food/comfort food spots! Whether you are cruising down Santa Monica Boulevard, the Sunset Strip, Robertson, Melrose or Hollywood, you will quickly notice that there is no shortage of burger joints. There’s Jack-in-the-Box, Apple Pan, Umami, Hole-in-the-Wall, Burger Joint, Pinks…you get the idea! But, one of my all time favorite’s is In-N-Out Burger!!!

Holy Cow … Read More »

How to Live the High Life on the Cheap | March 11, 2010

By Bridie Clark,
Author of The Overnight Socialite

1. Socialites entertain at home, outsourcing the work to caterers and wait staff.

A dinner party doesn’t need to break the bank, if you’re resourceful. Visit Costco for frozen cheese puffs and salted almonds. Serve a simple but refined pasta, such as cappelini with lemon zest and a soupcon of caviar, and your guests will feel they’ve been treated to something special. Hopefully they’ll return the invitation in the future.

2.  Socialites never miss an opening night.

Ballet enthusiast? Opera aficionado? Don’t be shy about calling your local performing arts centers and asking what kind … Read More »

L.A.’s Andaz West Hollywood is All About “Andaz” | March 11, 2010

Where: Andaz West Hollywood Hotel, 8401 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069

Choosing L.A. as a jet-set destination was easy – finding the perfect hotel was not. Of course, the perfect hotel should be a place you look forward to going back to at the end of a long day of shopping, dining, sight-seeing (or whatever else you spent the day doing) – offering a big, comfortable bed lined with crisp, clean sheets of a ridiculously high thread count and lots of plush pillows. But the perfect hotel should also be a place you would be totally content never leaving.

Enter Andaz … Read More »
