Advice from the Underbelly | April 30, 2010

By Jennifer Wider, MD,
Author of The New Mom’s Survival Guide: How to Reclaim Your body, Your Health, Your Sanity, and Sex Life After Having a Baby

When I was pregnant with my first child, I had no absolutely no idea what to expect. I went about my business as if nothing was different. At work I’d occasionally glance down at my growing belly as thoughts of chubby, quiet, smiling babies dressed in all-white filled my mind. I had convinced myself that my life wouldn’t really change.

Fast forward a few months — I was sitting in my infant daughter’s room and we … Read More »

Let out your Inner Minx! | April 30, 2010

Since I have been working in New York City, I am starting to notice different trends that I wouldn’t normally see working in the suburbs. The other day, I was at the local Fed Ex and I saw a girl that had shiny metallic silver polish; a little shinier than usual. So I asked her, “Where did you get your nail polish?” She told me that it’s actually like a nail sticker that they just put on your nails. Not exactly correct but described as best she could. It’s actually a process called a “Minx” coat and she had her … Read More »

Growing Too “Fonda” Plastic Surgery: Refreshing Without Regretting
By Vivian Diller Ph.D., Author of Face It: What Women Really Feel as Their Looks Change

Jane Fonda, stunning at 72, recently confessed to another round of plastic surgery. With mixed emotions, she said, “I got tired of not looking like how I feel.” On her blog she went on to admit, “I wish I’d been brave enough not to do anything.” Just a couple of years ago, Fonda had sworn off more such alterations. But clearly her resolve wore down as she exclaimed “Jowels Away!”

Far from feeling victorious, however, Fonda’s … Read More »

Moroccan Chicken with Rice | April 29, 2010

In another stop in the savory lane, I decided to make Moroccan Chicken with Rice for dinner. I am not going to lie, I was intrigued by the absolute giant number of different spices and ingredients. I wondered how it would all taste when put together because it seemed like it could be weird at the very least. I mean, really, Italian bread crumbs and turmeric?

If you don’t like recipes with a lot of ingredients, I encourage you to give this one a go just for the sheer difference of it and how amazing it ends up tasting. While there … Read More »

Healthy Skin/Healthy Body Protein Bars | April 29, 2010

Call me the Martha Stewart of Beauty and Health, but when I went out looking for protein bars that would help promote healthy skin, I didn’t find any…especially ones that were free of Soy (which causes me to get bad acne).  So, I did my research, and here is a great recipe for protein bars that I “tweaked” to make it even better…enjoy!!!

Ingredients

4 ounces whey protein powder, approximately 1 cup
2 1/4 ounces oat bran, approximately 1/2 cup
2 3/4 ounces whole-wheat flour, approximately 1/2 cup
3/4-ounce wheat germ, approximately 1/4 cup
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3 ounces raisins, approximately 1/2 cup
2 1/2 ounces dried cherries, approximately … Read More »

Avoiding Refined Sugar Helps Prevent Breast Cancer Recurrence | April 29, 2010

By Keith I. Block, M.D., Author of Life Over Cancer: The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment

Several years ago, we saw tremendous growth in the consumption of fat-free and low-fat products. Believing we now had “healthier” versions of everything from salad dressings to our favorite desserts, these products began flying off the shelves, and formerly “forbidden” foods for those watching their diets became acceptable in their reduced fat versions. While perhaps reducing their fat intake, most consumers were unknowingly increasing their sugar intake, as refined sugar was the ingredient most often used in place of fat. The increased … Read More »

Perspective… | April 28, 2010

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took their son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son,

‘How was the trip?’

‘It was great, Dad.’

‘Did you see how poor people live?’ the father asked.

‘Oh yeah,’ said the son.

‘So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip’ asked the father.

The son answered:

‘I saw that we have one dog and they had … Read More »

Windy, Chilly and LOFT | April 28, 2010

I went to the LOFT during Friends & Family to find something to wear to Saturday’s Girlfriends 2.0 networking event.  I had already purchased the necklace when I was in NYC at the Times Square LOFT store.  It was really chilly and windy, so I was glad I had on a cardigan.  The fact that I couldn’t stop laughing was all due to my girlfriend Jill making sure I didn’t stand still long enough to strike a pose.  The wind made sure of it too.

Cardigan: LOFT / Blouse: LOFT/ Jeans: Second Denim Co. / Shoes: Shane&Shawn / Necklace: … Read More »
