How to Recession Proof Your Family & Develop Kids Strengths | April 16, 2010

by Jenifer Fox,
Author of Your Child’s Strengths: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

Remember the movie Karate Kid? Wax on, wax off? The zen master prepares the boy for Karate championship by having him repeat endless chores that seem meaningless like rubbing the wax on a car and rubbing it off. Later in life this motion is used as an expert Karate move. When I was a girl, my father had us cleaning plate glass windows with a squee gee. Surprisingly, later in life, this simple activity has helped me save all kinds of money. Because of it, I clean my … Read More »

Quit the Rate Race: Break the Cycle of Female Competition | April 16, 2010

Over the years I’ve worked very hard to establish my online business. I’ve cranked out blog posts, videos and networked until my fingers about fell off.  Now in year four, I’m finally seeing the fruits of my labor.  My online business is flourishing — But not because I’m competent. Other women who believed in me and who were willing to help me climb the corporate online ladder are partly to credit for a lot of my success.

However, there are some women who clearly see doing business with other women as a competition.  I do not. The other day a female … Read More »

Incorporating Deep Sea Treasures | April 16, 2010

The deep blue is where you will find the latest trends for Spring and Summer. The ocean has influenced shell inspired handbags, ocean toned pumps, nautical inspired clothing and the must have sandy beach jewelry.  It is quick and easy to achieve a sea adventure look.

It is so simple to add the seascape to your look, keep it simple and chic. Combining a sweet striped top and ocean blue pants will instantly look yacht ready.  If you are not so daring, try incorporating a white cardigan, red tank and denim to create a more subtle look.  When in doubt, adding a chain … Read More »

LOFT Summer 2010 | April 15, 2010

While visiting the Flagship LOFT store in Times Square, New York, NY this week to meet with LOFT executives and the director of the Lucky magazine Alpha Shoppers, I was struck by the vibrant, yet calming colors of their summer collection. They just launched the 2010 Summer line and it’s filled with bright, airy maxi dresses, beautiful watercolor scarves and aqua and turquoise jewelry.

There was an entire wall of tees in a rainbow of colors.  I was able to select colors that fit my Spring color palette I received from my stylist Christie Ressel and pair them with the perfect … Read More »

Bourbon Three Bean Bake | April 15, 2010

Taking a detour down the savory lane of the FABU Highway, I want to share this luscious bean dish with you.  I was intrigued at the idea of using the three different beans and was happy to find all of the ingredients available in my kitchen.  This recipe takes a little time to prepare but it is more than worth it.

While you are preparing the beans, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp.

While the bacon was cooking, I chopped the onion and green pepper.

Remove to paper toweling to drain.

Pour off … Read More »

Ways To De-stress From Raising Teens | April 15, 2010

By Joanne Kimes and R.J. Colleary with Rebecca Rutledge, PhD,
Authors of Teenagers Suck: What to do when missed curfews, texting, and “Mom can I have the keys?” make you miserable

I’m sure there are a few parents out there raising teenagers who don’t have any problems what-so-ever. Their kids help out around the house without being told, love to spend time with their younger siblings, and have lemonade stands every weekend to raise money for the poor. But for most of us that live on planet Earth, raising a teenager can be a very stressful job filled with constant … Read More »

Resting the Busy Mind | April 15, 2010

By Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche

Sometimes we’re angry but forget why. We may not be sure of the real reason for our anger, but our gut feeling says our anger is justified and we hold on to it. We start to think of justifications for our anger: the time our friend forgot to call, insulted the family dog, was late for the movies, never picks up checks, and constantly complains. Suddenly, we have lots of reasons to be angry. The list is endless. That cheers us up, and our busy minds are satisfied for a moment.

Whether it’s anger or passion … Read More »

A City Divided by Fine Lines | April 15, 2010

Where are midtown and south Tulsa?

By Jason  Ashley Wright Tulsa World Scene Writer

P. Casey Morgan used to live in south Tulsa — around 49th Street and Peoria Avenue.

That was a handful of years ago, though. “It’s now considered — I think — midtown,” said Morgan, who now lives near 15th Street and Delaware Avenue, “what I have always and still consider midtown.”

But if 49th Street and Peoria Avenue is midtown, “What is 15th and Delaware? Downtown? Uptown? Cherry Street Town?”

Depending on where they live and, perhaps, how long they’ve been here, Tulsans’ opinions of each city district’s parameters — not … Read More »

Managing Unruly Skin | April 15, 2010

If your skin is anything like mine the recent unpredictable weather in the NYC area has done a number on your beautiful canvas!  I have been seeing a dermatologist since I was about 16 for acne related issues and have followed his advice and use of clinical products to manage my skin.  Unfortunately, sometimes there is little you can do.  After many battles, some won and some lost, I have found some great products that work well to treat acne flare ups and sooth redness and dryness related to the use of benzoyl peroxide.  I wanted … Read More »

No Place Like Home… | April 14, 2010

“Home! And this is my room – and you are all here!
And I’m not going to leave here ever again, because I love you all!

And — Oh, Auntie Em —–

there’s no place like home!“

Home is where the heart is.
People long to be at home. Your home is whatever place you long to be. I’ve had a lovely time traveling, but home is where the heart is…

It feels good to be home!

I love getting away and it doesn’t even have to be far. I gain such a fresh perspective and lets face it…these days when we are left to face reality … Read More »

Turn Here | April 13, 2010

By Kathy Kinney & Cindy Ratzlaff,
Authors of Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown-Up Woman’s Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve

Wouldn’t it be interesting to look back at the experiences you’ve had in your life without judgment and without labeling them good or bad? From this lofty place at the midpoint in our lives we’ve noticed in looking back that ironically, good things often came from “bad” experiences and sometimes, bad things from “good.” It really seemed to us that the road we’re on in life can end very suddenly, and as we come … Read More »
