Oat and Beer Bread | May 14, 2010

I have made beer bread before but when I saw this recipe, I wanted to try it. I love to bake our bread and I knew the oats would lend it a whole different flavor.  I was right. It’s amazing bread. It makes a HUGE amount of dough and the recipe says to put it into two regular sized loaf pans. I would suggest to do that even though it looks like a lot. I used two Pullman loaf pans and so the loaves, although tasty, are short.

Be sure not to eat the bread all in one sitting. This makes … Read More »

The Lost Art of Feminine Mystique | May 14, 2010

It seems that a growing number of women are entering into bolder and bawdier territory these days.  We could point fingers all day long, blaming reality TV, our continued fascination with Sex and the City, or the general dumbing down of society…the list goes on ad nauseum.  At first I thought it was just me being a bit picky about proper behavior, but a remarkable number of friends – most of them male, have noticed it as well.  And let me tell you, they are not amused.

Now, please don’t get me wrong; I strongly believe that women must assert themselves.  … Read More »

He Likes Me — Doesn’t He? | May 13, 2010

By Simon Oaks,
Author of Will Marry for Food, Sex, and Laundry: How to Get Him — and How to Keep Him

Times have changed.  The days of Rhett Butler telling Scarlett O’Hara he didn’t give a damn are long gone.  That’s a shame in some ways. At least it made dating simple.  Nowadays, guys try to be considerate in an attempt to not hurt your feelings.  His miscues make it hard to know whether he’s really into you, just wants to be friends or would love for you to switch phone plans.  While words might not be his … Read More »

Chocolate Merlot Cake with Cardamom | May 13, 2010

What to do with leftover wine or wine that you don’t care too much for in the glass? Here is a great chocolate cake recipe where you can use up that extra Merlot.  It makes a big, rich cake and the unusual combination of chocolate, merlot and cardamom makes it FABU!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  I made this cake in a bundt pan. In my experience, the secret to having the cake come out of this type of pan easily is to spray it with Baker’s Joy. I then dusted the pan with cocoa. This dusting of cocoa keeps … Read More »

Secret Sunscreen | May 12, 2010

I don’t shun the sun. But then again, I don’t lay around in Crisco anymore either. I also know there are some places that even a big crazy brimmed hat (Derby or othewise) won’t protect. Within this partially sunny weather forecast I have set for myself, there are rules. Of course, SPF. Nothing new there. But I also try to remember the hush-hush places that no one seems to discuss when it comes to sunscreen. And with new research linking a common food additive to skin cancer, I figure we need … Read More »
