Friday Night, Pizza Night | June 24, 2010

I can’t remember when the tradition in our family of having pizza every Friday night began. I was gifted with The Joy of Cooking at my bridal shower and I sort of laughed because cooking wasn’t something I thought I would ever do.

After we had been married a couple of years, we re-enlisted in the Marine Corps to go to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Once we arrived we soon realized that going out for dinner several times a week wasn’t an option. There was one restaurant we could go to, Blue Caribe, but it was run by the Navy and the … Read More »

Smart Mothers Know That… | June 23, 2010

Even If Your Budget’s Tight You Can Still Date Your Mate

It’s easy to fall into the family trap, where kids are number one, and most of your energy is directed at taking care of your children and keeping family harmony. True family harmony comes when the mother and father still share a fondness for each other.

Yes, it takes time, effort and a little bit of planning to rekindle the ol’ spark. Moms and dads need to take time away from the kids to reconnect. At first you’ll feel like you’re just going through the motions, but once you get … Read More »

Oversized and Fabulous | June 23, 2010

Blouses are one thing a girl can never get enough of in her wardrobe. They can be used in so many ways that you could literally wear them until they fall apart!

I stumbled upon this gem at modekungen.se ($67) – an oversized polka dot blouse. I absolutely ADORE how slouchy it looks and instantly want to pair it with a dark blazer, some coloured pants, killer heels and or course, statement jewellery to spice the look up a bit.

It can be worn with a pencil skirt (or any skirt for that matter) or trousers to become more appropriate for work … Read More »

Seoul, Korea- Day 1 | June 22, 2010

After the crazy flight experience leaving the U.S., I wound up losing a day of my time in Seoul, Korea. Instead, Continental put all of us up at the Nikko Narita Hotel at the airport in Japan for one night and put me on the first flight out to Seoul the next morning. It was so nice to finally get to my destination and check-in to the hotel which would be the place where I could rest my head for the next few days…ahhhhhhh!

The hotel was the Grand Intercontinental Seoul- an elegant, very nice and extremely clean hotel. (Don’t judge … Read More »

Dump the Wanna-Bes | June 22, 2010

I believe a true and trusted Girlfriend is something you learn and earn over time. Let me restate that. You learn and earn Girlfriend status. I don’t believe it’s something you are born knowing. Remember those mean girls in high school? Yes, some of them may still be mean, but I’ll bet at your last reunion, most of them had learned to respect their friends and are better, kinder people because of it. I know as I get wiser, using the word “older” involves Botox, I learn to be a better mom, wife, worker, and Girlfriend, many times because of … Read More »

Safe Deposit Box and Grab-N-Go Box | June 22, 2010

I am not an expert as to what you should or should not have in your safe deposit box or your grab-n-box at home but here are some ideas or suggestions that have worked for our family. The reason I like a safety deposit box in addition to a fire proof box/grab and go box at home is that we live in tornado alley and a tornado will blow away all of your important records.

Safe Deposit Box:

Original Documents: social security cards, birth or adoption certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, military records, passports.

Property: vehicle titles, household inventory, real estate … Read More »

How Stepmothers Can Find a Good Therapist | June 21, 2010

At least three times a week, stepmothers email me requesting a recommendation for good therapist where they live. Usually, I don’t know anyone in their area but I give them a list of questions to ask therapists before they finally select one with whom to work. Finding a good therapist requires some detective work. You need to find out some basic information to make sure you and a therapist share similar philosophies and goals. This will ensure that your experience in therapy helps rather than harms you.

Particularly with regard to stepmothers, many mental health professionals hold outdated ideas … Read More »
