My Aversion to the House Pet | June 14, 2010

I am afraid to tell people this.  In fact, to many of my esteemed friends and colleagues I have yet to.  Until now, that is.

I am not an animal person. In fact, I preface visits to people’s houses with the question: “Any pets?”

The few people I have confided this too stare at me with a mix of exasperation and confusion. Essentially, the look people give me when I tell them that I am not much of an animal gal is that of being a blackheart.  I do not want to harm the little bastards, as cute as they are; I … Read More »

Every woman has a pair of gold hoop earrings or a diamond heart pendant. Each are very classic pieces and serve as “the little black dress” of every woman’s jewelry wardrobe. However, choosing accessories with color can really change your look.

I believe choosing jewelry with color can elevate your personal style. Adding a sexy pair of garnet chandelier earrings or a beautiful agate cocktail ring can create a whole new look and get your style noticed.

Full Circle With Ted Neeley | June 14, 2010

I just finished watching Jesus Christ Superstar on TV again and it reminded me of a really cool thing I got to do. Last year I did a brief stint with KJRH in Bartlesville, OK, setting up BartlesvilleLive.com and providing hyperlocal coverage of what was going on in the ‘Ville.

I knew that Jesus Christ Superstar was coming to the Bartlesville Community Center but didn’t think a lot of it until station manager, Mike Vrabac, suggested that I try and get an interview with Ted Neeley, the star who has played the role of Jesus since the beginning.

I humored Mike, thinking … Read More »

Jumbo Banana Muffins | June 14, 2010

There is a lot of love for banana muffins in our house. I was trying to remember just how long I have been making these jumbo sized muffins and it’s definitely been over 20 years since I got my first large muffin pan.

These muffins are terrific, not hard to make and ready to eat pretty quickly. All of those reasons contributed to why they are so popular here. I think you will love them, too!

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.  Spray a jumbo muffin tin with Baker’s Joy or grease cups.

In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar.

Add baking powder … Read More »

Cards: It’s More Than Just a Game | June 11, 2010

There are certain aspects of my life that tend to portray me as somewhat older than I actually am. And by ‘older’ I mean ‘eighty’. Like the fact I’m an avid knitter and contribute baby hats alongside the ‘knitting grandmas’ club at my local hospital’s NICU. And, yes, I have even been known to have made a quilt or two in my day, although I apparently need to refine this particular skill as the blanket I gave my mother for Christmas has a few missed stitches or, as I prefer to call them, ‘finger nooks’.

I have been … Read More »

DRESSed to the MAXi! | June 11, 2010

Summer temperatures are rising and I’m not ready for that…yet! So, I’m always finding ways to look good and stay cool! The maxi dress popped into the “style circle” a few years ago, but it still remains a popular item when the temperatures run high.

Here are a few tips to look “hot” while staying “cool” in a maxi dress:

*Make sure you find the appropriate length for your height. Overly long hemlines will make you shorter, not taller.

*Keep an eye on the print in correlation to your body type/size. You want people to see you IN the dress and not have … Read More »

Tips for Using Your Slow Cooker: A Friendly Year-Round Appliance | June 11, 2010

by Phyllis Pellman Good, Author of Fix-it and Forget-it Cookbook: Revised & Updated: 700 Great Slow Cooker Recipes

1. What to buy

A good standard size for a household of four is a 4-quart slow cooker. If you often cook for more, or you like to prepare sizable roasts, turkey breasts, or chicken legs and thighs, you’ll want a 6-quart cooker.

For parties or buffets a 1½ to 2-quart size works well for dips and snacks.

Cookers which allow you to program “On,” the … Read More »

Love for Chanel | June 11, 2010

The Chanel cruise collection was shown in beautiful St. Tropez. The setting was perfect – right along the Riveria during sunset in a cafe with red directors chairs for all to sit in. A packed house – all in anticipation waiting to see what the legendary house had created for all of them.

Inspired by the Riveria’s casualness and freedom, Lagerfield had a noticeably relaxed feel to the collection that seemed to borrow from elements of the sixties. Delish.

The colours were dominated by many blues, yellows, pinks and whites. Perfect for the summer time and Caribbean getaways.

The collection was breathtaking and … Read More »

Help Your Young Teen Dress Appropriately | June 10, 2010

I stroll through a department store searching for a gift for a fashion-forward 13 year old.  I assume I’m in the wrong place as I wander through rows of tight-fitting and low-cut ensembles.  Entering another shop, I discover the same thing.  Three malls later, I’m empty handed, but my head is full of questions. What’s one to do when trends tend more toward tacky rather than tasteful?  When do we step in and refuse to allow our girls to wear words such as “juicy” stamped across their behinds?  Attention, moms and mentors, the time is now.

Easier said than done, I … Read More »
