This fashion reached its zenith in popularity around 2005, with notable followers of the trend including Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. It seems that the look is on the rise again this year though, so break out those floaty skirts and cowboy boots and get ready to get bohemian!

In fashion, the boho look is particularly inspired by the hippie trend and the ideology of hippies and bohemians. These ideologies are associated with freedom and relaxation, and therefore many of the clothes deemed as boho are extremely comfortable, wearable and at the same time very stylish. When people think of boho in women’s clothing, they often immediately think of floaty skirts. These are skirts made of lightweight fabrics that don’t cling closely to the body but hang down loosely. Pastel shades of pink and yellow are popular, as well as tan shades and in particular plain white. You can see why this is a perfect piece of clothing for the summer months, as these skirts will keep you nice and cool!

To go with your floaty skirt, the boho look is often complemented with tunic style tops. These are long and loose tops, often embroidered; giving them a delicate and old-fashioned feel. Tunic tops do not cling closely to the skin and so give your body room to breathe, which can be a nice change in hot months when you’re likely to sweat in skin tight clothes. Tunic tops usually have round necklines that can be low or high, so you can choose a lower neckline if you don’t want to look too frumpy. Tunic tops can work very well over women’s swimwear when it gets a little cooler or if you want to nip back to the hotel or to the shop straight from the beach without baring too much. You can also get tunic style dresses in a slightly longer length.

When it comes to accessories, boho chic usually works well with flip flops and sandals if it’s warm, or if you want something a little more substantial you can pair your outfit with cowboy boots. Ugg boots are also a defining element of boho chic and can work well with long tunic tops and leggings. Baggy cardigans, often knitted, are also popular, and if you want to pair your tunic top with a belt then there are lots of faux-coin belts in old-fashioned colours like faded bronze or pewter that can gather the fabric around your waist or hips. This look is all about looking natural and comfortable, effortlessly fabulous!

The boho look has waned over the past few years, but it is definitely making a comeback for 2010 with lots of boho elements being aired on the runway in collections for summer. If you’re looking to buy clothes with a boho flair, vintage stores are a good bet as well as the Monsoon chain of stores. Monsoon has been called “the boho chic fashion retailer” by the Sunday Times, so if you’re looking for well made, quality clothing in this style then Monsoon is the shop to splurge out in.
