Rachel Simmons argues that in idealizing the “Good Girl” — unerringly nice, polite, modest, and selfless — we teach girls to embrace a version of self-hood that curtails their power and potential.
Drawing from the stories of the women and girls who attend her workshops (recently profiled in the NYT here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/fashion/15Girls.html), Simmons traces the impact of Good Girl pressure on girls’ development and provides strategies to teach girls to not only listen to their inner voice, but also to empower and embrace their real selves. The Curse of the Good Girl is a call to arms from a new front in female empowerment, providing tangible lessons and effective strategies to help Good Girls become Real Girls.
The Curse of the Good Girl provides a catalog of practical strategies to foster girls’ assertiveness, resilience, and integrity. At the core of Simmons’s radical argument is her belief that the most critical freedom we can win for our daughters is the liberty not only to listen to their inner voice but also to act on it.
Rachel Simmons is the author of New York Times bestseller Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, the first book to explore the phenomenon of bullying among girls. Simmons works internationally with girls, parents, and teachers to develop strategies to address bullying and to empower girls. A Rhodes scholar, Simmons is the founding director of the Girls’ Leadership Institute and current;y serves as a consultant to schools and organizations around the world. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. http://www.rachelsimmons.com/

I would love to win this book. Being “a good girl” is what I’ve always been & it has served me no good. I’ve definately accomplished less than what I could if I would have learned to be a bit more assertive.
