Gym Class or Wire Storage? | December 15, 2010

I liked gym class but I liked it even more when it rained because we got to stay inside and play bombardment. Wow sometimes that ball could hurt! And we always kept our gym clothes in baskets that were made from wire and perforated metal.

But I think I like these baskets best just stacked on top of one another with nothing in them. Sometimes you just have to make a statement. … Read More »

“How old are you? You look really young.  You’re about 30? 35? I’ll wait until you get up from the table so I can see your body.  That will tell me.” (Personal Correspondence)

The above is what was said to me a few days ago while out with a group of girl friends.  Wow! Nike Grind…Reuse Your Shoes!! | December 14, 2010

Oh my goodness, this is the coolest thing ever!  I just learned about this very cool program by Nike ReUSE A SHOE that recycles athletic/tennis shoes in any condition, or any other brand and turns them into sports surfaces! They collect shoes from partnering retail stores and other shoe recycling centers. The shoes are taken apart in three sections.  The rubber on the bottom, the sole of the shoe and the fabric of the shoe and they place them onto three different conveyor belts to get ground up. After it has been through the “Nike Grind” they use the material … Read More »

Lace Cookies | December 13, 2010

This recipe was passed down from my Great-Grandmother to my Grandmama to me. Please note the missing generation: my mother. She was banned from the kitchen by our family for fear of her burning down the house. (We got tired of holding the fire extinguisher.)

As a little girl, I remember going to my Grandmama’s house and begging her to make Lace Cookies. She would bake them for us for every Holiday gathering, knowing that we would never have home baked goodies if we left it up to my mother. As children, we … Read More »

Practical Traditions

By Cyndi Pauwels
Yellow Springs, Ohio

Baking is taking up a good portion of my time these days as I enjoy a self-imposed sabbatical from academia before diving into my thesis in January. Bread baking is a regular event, but as the winter holidays approach, I dig out the recipes for sweets. We’ve jettisoned a good number of
mindless (and in my opinion, pointless) traditions over the years, but the baked goods give rise to meaning of their own.

Topping that list is my Great-aunt Zella’s Friendship Cookies, which are always greeted with raves when they appear on the buffet table. I don’t … Read More »

History of Christmas In America | December 10, 2010

For over 4,000 years people around the world have been observing Christmas with traditions in secular and religious practices in nature. Many of Americas Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The giving of gifts, holiday feasts, the Yule log, carnivals, singers going from house to house and church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

The pilgrims, who came to America in 1620, did not celebrate Christmas. Actually from 1659-1681 the celebrations of Christmas was outlawed in Boston. And anyone found celebrating the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. But in … Read More »
