Entrepreneur Tackles Personal Challenge That Results In Helping Millions | June 30, 2011

“Working in the vitamin industry and having to admit I couldn’t swallow pills was basically like wearing a Scarlet Letter A,” says New York native, Hallie Rich. Before founding Rich Vitamins LLC in 2009, Ms. Rich was the third generation to work in her family’s vitamin business. Working alongside her father and grandmother, Ms. Rich rose through the ranks, but despite her success in the company, she was keeping a pretty big secret—she couldn’t swallow vitamin pills.

According to a USA Today article, Ms. Rich isn’t alone… 100 million Americans have difficulty swallowing pills. Aware of the benefits of vitamins … Read More »

Glamorize a Neutral Outfit with the Right Accessories | June 30, 2011

On a casual day, in gloomy Washington, you rely on accessories to make your outfit pop. This can be accomplished in several ways. One, color, use bright accents to add to your neutral outfit. Two, statement pieces, pieces like the Lori cheetah bracelet by Robyn Rhodes (featured in these photos). Three, layered accessories, which make the bulk stand out against a simple outfit. All three concepts I used on a casual walk to the nearby Starbucks. Pairing the layered gold Lana ring with layered turquoise bracelets, topping it off with the Lori cheetah statement bracelet, along with … Read More »

The Run: London’s Secret | June 30, 2011

By Ella Roberts, author of The Run: London’s Secret

It was the beginning of summer 2005 and as usual I had nothing better to do than sit up in my room and read a book. After all I had no job, no money, and I had just dropped out of university doing a course I had no business even thinking about!

The book I was reading was about a publishing dynasty and half way through it, a random voice in my head asked “why don’t you write?”. Mind you, this voice had surfaced a few years earlier, and my answer … Read More »

Sailor Jerry Rum 4th of July BBQ | June 30, 2011

For lighter summertime fare, the Backyard Tea – made with lemonade and iced tea – strips the innocence and adds a bite to the classic barbeque beverages. Easy to make and great for group, it can batched and served as a punch so guests can serve themselves — and you can focus on manning delicious burgers and steaks searing on the grill.

Made with a spicy combination of ginger beer, pilsner, Tabasco and our beloved Sailor Jerry, the ingredients aptly explain its name – The Hellfire. Not for the faint of heart, this cocktail – a place where sweet, spicy, and … Read More »

Ten for the Win | Minimalist Packing for Travel-Savvy Chicks | June 30, 2011

It happens to the most seasoned of travelers.  You start with the basic essentials—toothbrush, underwear, sensible shoes—and yet somehow, by the time you load up the car or board your flight, you’ve convinced yourself that eight changes of footwear and an evening gown will be good to have around just in case.

Kudos to you for your natural instinct to always be prepared, but let’s face it, you probably didn’t need a just in case Nordic sweater on your last trip to Barbados.  Airline companies are becoming hip to the average fashionista’s jive—checked baggage fees alone will take a bite out … Read More »

Life Lessons: Children’s Books by Jan Krauel | June 29, 2011

Kids’ Problems Aren’t So Small After All

As adults, we tend to look at children and fondly think back to a time when we were carefree, without grown-up problems and worries.  But all we have to do is think back to our own childhoods to realize that this isn’t always the case.  Kids’ lives are often filled with fears, doubts and social problems such as fitting in, peer pressure and teasing.  If these aren’t resolved during our growth years, we often drag them along into adulthood with us.

These issues can be tackled in a fun and subtle way through the use … Read More »

Shorts From a Plus Size Perspective | June 29, 2011

Growing up on islands most of my life and being a big girl from the age of 13, I have long gotten used to wearing shorts… I’d be damned if I died from a heatstroke! LOL

However…

Gone are those days when, as a younger girl, I could carelessly get away with anything (or so I thought). I think when I was a youngin (think like 12-15), I owned one pair of pants, until I moved to Cali. Compared to Hawai’I, California was COLD and Freezing!!!

So, why do I share all this? As the summer approaches, heat waves testing us in our near … Read More »

17 Simple First Aid Tips | June 28, 2011

A wise EMT once told me, “The first thing to do in any emergency is to calm yourself by focusing on exactly what you have to do – one step at a time.” If there are frightened children around you, give them something to do. Let them help you. One doctor I know instructed a frightened mother at a car accident to empty the doctor’s first aid kit one piece of equipment at a time and bring each piece of equipment to him, and then he had her repack the kit while he worked on her son.

Tip 1. The first … Read More »

Power of the Necklace | June 28, 2011

The beauty of necklaces is that they don’t need to be heirlooms to lift an outfit from the bottom step of mediocrity to the highest echelons of a Best Dresser. Just look at  Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O; they both understood the power of a plain dressed teamed with a fabulous necklace.

However, be warned. If you have a short neck, squat face or big boobs, then necklaces should be one of the lesser items in your repertoire. Unhappily short necks, especially those with a hint of a double chin look terrible in necklaces.

Here’s my guide list:

* Look at your neckline … Read More »
