Cues from Cats | June 16, 2011

I feel there is no creature more magnificent than the cat. I’ve had cats as pets my whole life, and remain mesmerized by them.

In our quest for style and sheer fabulousness, we would all do well in following our feline friends:

1. Good, thorough grooming – a cat takes pride in her appearance, washing and ‘spiffying’ herself up frequently throughout the day. It’s so important to look one’s best.

2. Beauty sleep – a cat knows that sleep matters. Lack of sleep affects everything – our moods, our skin, our productivity.

3. Stretching – Have you ever heard a cat complain about a … Read More »

Summer Fabric Blends: The Breathable Ingredients with Chrissy Volk | June 16, 2011

SUMMER FABRIC “INGREDIENTS”

DENIM

COTTON + STRETCH = CUTE BUTT: Cotton jeans are the lightest for summer because they are airy and breathable, however, jeans with a small content of stretch are the most flattering. They will move with your body and it’s movements.

BEST DENIM BLENDS: Chrissy suggests denim with a high cotton content, and small synthetic content. A jean with either a 98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra fabric, is a good combination. Joe’s Jeans, Seven For all Mankind, Citizen, Gap are all great for this content!

TEES AND TANKS

SOFTEST TEES: Cotton tees and tanks are favored in the summer … Read More »

Summer Accessories: Amanda Brooks on Beach Baubles | June 15, 2011

It seems like almost everything in fashion can be worn year-round these days, but there is no better time than summer to adorn ourselves with treasures from the sea.

What I love most about coral and shells is that there are so many ways to wear them. You could channel a Native American girl from an Edward Curtis photo, a WASPy lady from Palm Beach, or even a hippie chick just back from a surfing holiday.

Bohemian or preppy, earthy or refined, sea-inspired jewelry is the perfect way to embellish your summer look.

Since President Woodrow Wilson declared Fathers’ Day a national holiday in 1916, people have complained that gifts for their fathers are among the most difficult to buy.  Although 9.8 billion dollars was spent last year on Fathers’ Day gifts in more than 25 countries, frequently little thought or originality went into their selection.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Why So Pricey? | June 13, 2011

Gwyneth Paltrow put together a lookbook on her site/newsletter GOOP, featuring her ideal spring fashion from luxury online retailer site Net-a-Porter.  In itself, this seems like a de rigueur move, given Paltrow’s fashionable-actress status.  However, there’s pretty much one way to describe everything Paltrow thinks you should be wearing this season, and it is expensive.  Now, why would she do that?  Laypeople already know that celebs’ clothing doesn’t come cheap (except when they’re given it for free), so we’re none too sold on this carefully curated reminder of that fact.

The Telegraph crunched some numbers; the six-look wardrobe comes in at around $18,000.  … Read More »
