Without Words | July 19, 2011

As much as I love words, I prefer writing them to actually speaking them. I feel far more is communicated through deeds rather than what we might say. I’ve always been drawn to the doers of the world rather than the talkers. I like people of action, who simply go about their business without having to report their every move to everyone they encounter.

I think we learn a great deal about a person through her demeanor, expression, and even her manner of dress. So, with that in mind, what sort of message are you sending … Read More »

Clams on the Grill with Herbed-Citrus Sauce | July 19, 2011

Clams on the Grill with Herbed-Citrus Sauce
Serves 6-8

This is a perfect appetizer, cocktail tidbit or snack. Grilling clams is quick to do while chatting with guests. Served topped with a light, refreshing herb sauce, there is nothing more elegant or easy to do. These clams would be a wonderful way to end an afternoon’s reading of one of the books of the sea, or a grand cap to a good beach read. If clams are not available, mussels would work just fine. This is a light repast to tide one over till dinner, or to begin one.

3 to 4 dozen … Read More »

How To Pull Off Statement Pieces | July 18, 2011

Do you ever walk by that occasionally style-confused person and think “Great idea, but bad execution?”

As someone who likes to generally play it safe, I can attest to the fact that it is challenging to go out on a limb. Yes, my closet is filled with neutral colors, but what keeps things interesting in my wardrobe are statement pieces—the oh-so-spontaneous bursts of color that keep me saying, “Yes, I work in a cubical, but I do have a life.”

The key to wearing statement pieces successfully is to not overdo it. If you have a chunky necklace, opt for something subtler … Read More »

Mixed South American Grill with Chimichurri | July 15, 2011

Mixed South American Grill with Chimichurri
Serves 8 to 10

Although many traditional meat dishes in South and Central America are stews, certain countries, particularly Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, are known for both their fine-quality beef and outdoor cooking, called “asado” in Spanish; “churrasco” in Portuguese. The representative grill recipe that follows can only be done on an outdoor grill. However, the Chimichurri Sauce is one that can be used for all types of meat (even a hamburger), poultry and fish, even if cooked indoors. You can also use any red or green salsa that you prefer.

½ cup coarse salt
¼ cup minced … Read More »

Chic Galleria’s Editor in Chief Featured in Adweek Magazine | July 14, 2011

I was so excited when I heard that Adweek magazine was featuring me in an article by By Lucia Moses!

Sacramento Can Help End Human Trafficking by Getting Their Hair Cut | July 13, 2011

Sex trafficking and child prostitution are not the topics that typically come to mind when getting a hair styled, but perhaps it should be. At least, come this July. The Hattori Hanzo Trade – a not-for-profit founded by Chris McCarly and Jonathan Klein of Hattori Hanzo Shears, has Sacramento residents getting their coifs cut for a great cause.

With every pair of shears its parent company sells, this organization collects and updates the recipient’s gently used ones. With equipment in tow, they send a brigade of stylists to developing countries to teach ex-prostitutes … Read More »
