Girls’ Day Out: The Adventure | July 13, 2011

By Paulette Jones, author of Girls’ Day Out: The Adventure

After searching for books for young girls, the daughters, nieces, cousins and mentees, it was discovered that there weren’t many in the genre of tween quasi fiction. The girls between the ages of nine and twelve were still reading princess books. The books that were available seemed to be preparing the girls for puberty. And the teenage books were too grown up for them with references to boyfriends, makeup and fashion.

Princess books are ok, but the tween age group is ready for a little more substance and a little more reality. … Read More »

Gems for Good: Interview with Jeweler and Healer Andrea Rosenfeld | July 12, 2011

Who doesn’t love a pretty, sparkly gemstone? I sure do! But what if a gem can be so much more than a beautiful bauble? According to Andrea Rosenfeld, a New Jersey-based jewelry designer, Reiki practitioner and all-around cool multi-media artist, gemstones can do more than just dress up an outfit: they can heal.

Now, I’m as hippie-dippie lovey-dovey as I can be in our cynical postmodern age, but this one was new to me. So I had to talk personally with Andrea and find out how gemstones do double-duty as nurturing objects…and see some of them in action in … Read More »

Amanda Brooks Back in Black | July 11, 2011

After so many seasons of escalating heel heights (culminating with Lady Gaga‘s 12-inch platforms at the 2011 CFDA awards), it’s refreshing to remember how chic a single-sole black heel can be. Whether it’s a sandal, pump or bootie, on a stiletto or a wedge, this simple style has never looked so appealing.

As I was browsing the new pre-Fall collections on Barneys.com this weekend, a pair of demure open-toe Louboutin wedges caught my eye. I instantly thought of Sofia Coppola, my black shoe muse (I can’t help assigning wardrobe staples to specific style icons). More often than not, Sofia pairs a perfectly simple dress … Read More »

Amanda Brooks’ Rules of the Wrist | July 8, 2011

Maybe it’s my childhood love of Wonder Woman or my neurotic obsession with symmetry, but when it comes to cuffs, I like to wear one on each wrist. The bold balance of two chunky objects can really anchor the rest of the outfit. By trial and error, I have developed three golden rules for those who dare to wear cuffs:

1. Coco Chanel and Diana Vreeland looked fabulously eccentric mixing cuffs with lots of other jewelry, but I prefer the modern simplicity of cuffs worn on their own.

2. The scale of the cuffs should match the volume of your outfit. If … Read More »

High-Luxury Children Clothing | July 8, 2011

Was it just us, or did a slew of very upscale children’s wear just hit the market?  With brands like Versace and Gucci entering the world of toddler-wear, baby-luxury has grown into a full-fledged trend (recession be damned!).  Here’s a tour of the fanciest threads out there for lucky rug rats.

No need to feel guilty if your children destroy their Gucci threads – the luxury house is celebrating the launch of their children’s line, for infants to eight-year-olds, by donating $1 million to UNICEF’s “Schools for Africa” initiative. Photo courtesy of Gucci.
