Got Milk? | August 31, 2011

No but we have plenty of vintage milk bottles.

Light them up and you have vintage industrial lighting. Who would think that ordinary milk bottles could look so good. Take whatever your collection or favorite things are and light them up to create lighting for your home. I like these bottles even without the milk but they are even better as industrial lighting. Don’t limit the lighting in your home to just chandeliers and table lamps. Accent lighting like this can make a room and also let you enjoy your vintage finds day and night. A little creativity can go a … Read More »

Make Walking Your Dog a Walk in the Park | August 30, 2011

Dear Inquisitive Canine,

With patience on my part and a lot of practice, my dogs Ady and Ashley are coming along ok. However, one area that we need help is loose leash walking. They are pretty good, but only about 75% of the time.

If they see a pigeon, cat or dog, it’s all over. I’m no longer the center of the universe but some chump they’re dragging along for the ride. I’m sure there is something that I should be doing differently but what is it?  Can you give us some advice?

Thanks,

Arlene

Back-To-School Success Strategies | August 29, 2011

As we approach another school year, I’d like to encourage parents everywhere take an active approach when it comes to their children’s education. It requires a ‘teamwork’ mentality in order to help our children be the absolute best they can be. As a former teacher and school administrator, I offer the following tips:

Set Goals – Have your child write down a few goals he or she would like to accomplish this school year. Earning straight A’s, making the varsity team, or simply getting out of bed on time are just a few examples. By writing down … Read More »

The Early Scoop on Fashion’s Night Out 2011 | August 29, 2011

It’s time to get everyone ready for the third annual Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) on September 8, 2011.  Although this late-night shopping event originated in New York, Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) is not just for New Yorkers.  In its third year it has evolved into one of the greatest global late-night shopping events.  It is expected to be much bigger and better than last year and definitely more widespread.  It is rapidly catching the interest of retailers in every state, not just New York and California.  This is definitely the best time to prepare for FNO, especially for newbies.  Now is … Read More »

Why Trenchcoats Are The Best Thing About Autumn | August 26, 2011

What’s the best thing about Autumn? Is it the leaves turning a lovely shade of gold as they fall from the trees? Maybe it’s the crisp Autumn mornings? The chance of an Indian Summer?

For me, it is none of those things. The best single thing about Summer turning to Autumn is the chance to wear a trenchcoat.

Of all the coats, jackets, cardigans and cover ups that we wear, the classic trenchcoat is the most iconic. It works in any shade, can be worn with the belt fastened neatly, or tied jauntily, and is just as … Read More »

Summer Meals: Blini-Style Crepes | August 25, 2011

Blini-Style Crepes with Sour Cream, Caviar, and Chives

By: Robin Donovan and Juliana Gallin, authors of The Lazy Gourmet: Magnificent Meals Made Easy

Blini, thin pancakes similar to crepes, are a staple of Eastern European cuisine. They’re mandatory party fare for my Ukranian friends, who stack them high on a self-serve platter along with elegant little bowls of sour cream, caviar, and chives for guests to fill to taste. Last weekend I hosted a crepe brunch and took a cue from my droogs. I cheaped out and used capelin roe (the bright orange roe used for sushi) instead of traditional fancy caviar, but I heard … Read More »

Perhaps not everyone knows that… curiosities about Italian shoes | August 25, 2011

Idolized, photographed and beloved by celebrities and by all of us, the Italian shoes are the joy of all the shoe addicted, but perhaps not everyone knows that…

* The most expensive shoes in the world are Italian. It’s a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti’s sandals, realized in collaboration with Chopard for the last Festival of Cannes.

*600 briolette in different nuances of pink for a total amount of 360 karats. Pink tourmalines and sapphires, diamonds and rubies transform the ankle strap of the shoe in a real jewel, in fact it could be removed from the shoes and be worn as a … Read More »

When Is Going Green Too Green? | August 24, 2011

This industrial dining table might be taking “green” to an extreme but I like it.

Covered in soft green moss, it’s hard to notice the industrial metal on this big dining table. Made with a great rust finish, no worries if you have to water the moss to keep it green. Just pour it on.

I know it might be hard to eat on top of this dining table but think how much fun and how good it would look for that special occasion or holiday. Bringing the outdoors in with potted flowers and real moss, this industrial table certainly … Read More »

30 Things I Have Learned About The Art of Dressing | August 24, 2011

I turned 30 over the weekend and had a few (just a few) realizations as I contemplated my life so far. I reflected back on how far I have come and thought about where I hope to be in the next few years.  I wonder what my 10-year-old, day dreamy, starry-eyed self would think of me.  Would she be shocked to find out that I don’t have my own place, I still live at home, I am not a fashion designer or a singer or an actor and I don’t know everything, sigh. Perhaps she would, hopefully though she would … Read More »
