Healthy Comfort Food Fit for the White House | August 12, 2011

By Sam Kass, Featured in Clara Silverstein’s A White House Garden Cookbook

This delicious and healthy dinner was originally prepared by White House assistant chef Sam Kass for Michelle Obama and a group of volunteering kids from Bancroft school, close to the White House Garden. This dish is amazing because once you get through the easy preparation of the chicken, you set it in the oven, start the rice, and then you can relax for a half hour and boom! Two more minutes on the peas and the dish is done! It’s the perfect, light, family dinner … Read More »

The Life (and unfortunate passing) of Amy Winehouse. | August 12, 2011

I’ll admit it; I was never a huge fan of Amy Winehouse, nor had ever heard of her music. In fact, the closest I got to hearing about the singer (prior to this tragic event) was through Gaga, who once remarked that she dyed her hair blonde after people often mistook her for Winehouse. (Gaga, for those who do not know, is a natural brunette and has proceeded to bleach her hair blonde — a la Christina Aguilera — ever since her debut.)

Nonetheless, when I had heard of Winehouse’s passing, I was shocked. As I stated, I had never really listened … Read More »

When I was 18, I put a bumpersticker on my car from a leather boy shop in Boston. Sporting discreet little handcuffs, it read: “It’s Better in Leather.” This really spiffed up my uber-dorky VW Dasher! My feeling of cool was cut short when, unsurprisingly, my parents removed it. I was hugely annoyed at their bourgeois mentality but soon realized that suburban New England was not ready for me…or my pretentious leather.

My love affair with leather began long before my bumper sticker and continues long after. Gone is the 1980s, and 1990s, and 2000s and with the decades, … Read More »
