The fashion world has been out en-masse these past few weeks. With Fashion Weeks everywhere from London to New York all eyes have been on the catwalks of the world’s leading designers and the most popular high street names. However, after the frenzy of Fashion Week, we must all come back down to earth with a bump and get on with what to wear this season. In the UK, inspiration comes from the massive collection of dresses at House of Fraser. Proving that dresses aren’t the reserve of spring and summer, House of Fraser has put together an exquisite collection over almost 2000 dresses available online. Both leading designer names such as Ralph Lauren, Max Mara and Tommy Hilfiger sit happily alongside high street favourites such as Mango, Lipsy and Oasis.
Here we pick out some of the best styles to last the entire winter season, keeping you on-trend with minimal effort.
Across the fashion world there is a strong emphasis on native, traditional materials and patterns. Drawing inspiration from Navajo Indians, the Aztecs and simple checks and tartans, dresses are emitting notions of traditionality. Wool and cotton are key materials and colours of red, blue, yellow and orange take things back to basics. Look for simple shift or shirt-style dresses and accessorise with woollen tights, belted cardigans, chucky scarves and preferably a bit of denim in some shape or form.
Another key winter trend and one that places strong emphasis on dresses is the mod-feeling 1960s inclination. This was the decade of the shift, and it is back once again in all its sophisticated and elegant glory. Look for bright colours of red, mustard and orange. Drop waist pockets add interest and shape to the 1960s’ loser fitting shift dress styles and the neckline must either be high and rounder or Peter Pan style.
Ah the 1940s, another era fond of dresses. This time the shape is decidedly more fitted and feminine, with less sass and more sensuality. Waists are cinched in with skinny belts, necklines are v-necked and sleeves are capped. The dress itself comes in really just one style, but in numerous colour and pattern guises. The tea dress, hemmed at the mid-thigh is one of the most covetable dresses of the season and definitely one for an evening out. Add a Burberry style mac, beret, silk scarf, fitted round-neck cardigan and a leg-flattering pair of heeled brogues and you are more than knee-deep into this trend.
