It’s always been said breakfast is the important meal of the day…and it’s true!  A healthy breakfast prepares both your body and mind for the long day ahead:  Not only does a vitamin-packed breakfast get your metabolism going, so you can burn calories quicker during the day, but it’s also linked to improved cognitive function, greater attention span and better memory skills.  But in this fast paced world, do we always have time for a healthy breakfast?

Melissa Paris, not only recommends a healthy breakfast to kick-start your day, but also gives tips on running and exercise.

What should you do to modify your diet to reflect your running routine?

“Eating a diet rich in complex carbs, low in fat, and a sufficient amount of protein.  After 60-90 minutes of exercise your body has used up all its carbohydrates so you do want to replenish if you are on a long run.  A ½ a cliff bar or a gu pack will give you the energy to finish strong.”

Who are the best running partners?

“Someone you feel comfortable with who is at your same level.  It may be helpful to join a team such as: New York Road Runners or ask in local gyms.  Once you join a team you can seek out people that are similar to your pace and goals!”

When is the best time of day to train for a race?

“Whenever you feel your best.  If you’re a morning person get up and do it first thing!  If you’re a snoozer it is probably best to wait till after work so you do not feel like it is a chore in the morning.”

How can you set realistic goals if you’re a novice runner?

“Be patient.  Start with 10-15 minutes of moderate pace and write down how you feel the next day.  If you are feeling good add another 5-10 minutes on until you have reached your desired distance.”
