Hey parents and teachers, listen up! World Book Day is on March 1st and is coming up fast! What’s that? You say you don’t know what World Book Day is all about? Well, I’m here to tell you! World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books, and reading! It is actually one of the biggest celebrations for reading and has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration, which is celebrated in over 100 countries throughout the world! Children need to be excited about reading and World Book Day aims to do just that!
In honor of World Book Day, National Book Tokens Limited will send vouchers to the various schools throughout the UK and Ireland who have registered through www.WorldBookDay.com. With these vouchers, students will be able to visit their local bookstore and pick one of the eight newest and best selling children’s books for free (at participating bookstores). These eight books include some great reads: The What the Ladybird Heard Song, Winnie Flies Again, Where’s Wally Now?, Magic Molly, Roald Dahl’s Fantabulous Facts, How to Train Your Dragon: The Day of the Dreader, Big Day Out, and Skulduggery Pleasant: The End of the World. If you aren’t interested in these eight, that’s fine! Simply use your voucher as a coupon towards another book purchase. To find out if there is a local bookstore near you that is participating, visit www.Booksellers.org!
Throughout the UK and Ireland, there will be various events at bookstores and schools. By visiting the World Book Day website, you can learn about each event’s time and place. You also have the option of adding your own event to the list! For those of you in the United States, there is no need to fret! While most of the scheduled events are only in the UK and Ireland, there are various online events available for registry! Wouldn’t it be fun to halt the boring math lessons and allow the children to watch their favorite authors live? The authors will be talking about their favorite books and reading their stories. You can also send in questions from your students for the author to answer via the webcast! To register for viewing of the online webcasts, just visit www.WorldBookDay.streamuk.com!
So, would you like to participate? Students sure do love to mix up the daily classwork with a fun book and movie. Now that you know about all of the fun, let’s make it even more exciting! Fancy Dress Ball, a website dedicated to costume designs, offers World Book Day costumes for children who want to match their favorite character!
You can choose from so many characters: Harry Potter, Robin Hood, Where’s Wally, Sherlock Holmes, Cleopatra, or even a pirate! The list goes on and on. Matching adult costumes are offered as well for those of you who would like to join in on the celebration with your students. To view more costumes, you can visit www.fancydressball.co.uk!
