PinExt Thematic Fashion Lines from Fall 2012

This year’s fall fashion lines produced some interesting themes that should have already cropped up in women’s and mens clothing stores across the country. Ranging from the American Southwest to militaristic uniforms to the 1950s European business look, these collections should be noted for their particularly creative and thematic qualities. Here are a few choice examples:

Michael Bastian—Theming his collection on a 1974 New York Times article titled “The Most Wanted List,” Bastion went in a more dressed up direction for his fall line, opting for chalk stripe double-breasted suits, contrast collar gingham shirts, shantung neckties, boutonnieres, three piece Glen plaid suits, purple wool/cashmere shawl-collared jackets, and moleskin topcoats. Going for a modern-day, laid back feel, with plenty of luxe to go around, Bastian didn’t spare on sweaters, turtlenecks or plaid workshirts either.

Simon Spurr—The Simon Spurr Fall line aimed at more crisp, tailored, business-like and fabric-centric look that didn’t use any jeans, which is unusual for Spurr. Instead, he went with mauve leather-sleeved wool suits and silver-buttoned hound’s tooth jackets that took aim at a 1950s high-culture London feel.

Carlos Campos—Basing his collection on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “Love In The Time of Cholera”, Campos filled his fall collection with natural fibers like wool cashmere, silk, and cotton and pared them with mellow tones. His color block suits, in particular, are perfectly tailored.

Patrik Ervell—Ervell went for the police state look with his collection, showcasing tightly drawn militaristic uniform look with heavy doses of navy and nylon. Other touches included painted silk, black pleather, dark suits, and slim legs.

Band of Outsiders—Scott Sternberg’s fall line was based on Mexico and the American Southwest. In fact, his New York show opened to the “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” theme. Featuring puffer vests, scarves, and toggle coats in desert Baja tones, the Band of Outsiders line reveled like a pristine shootout. The women’s collection featured prairie dresses, shaggy furs, and periwinkle printed pants.

Rag and Bone Men’s—Designers David Neville and Marcus Wainwright presented a decidedly uncertain line for the fall, mixing striped wool with greatcoats, red-striped tuxedo pants, blazers with leather collars, and a tapestry jacquard jacket—all running a wild gamut of colors.

These collections are just a cross-section of the fashion lines that debuted this fall. But they represent a bold tableau of thematic styles and daring creative choices across the board. Check back in late March to see what spring brings us from the coastal fashionistas.
