Marc Jacobs recently showed his Fall/Winter 2010 collection at New York fashion week. The entire collection was absolutely stunning. MJ, who is normally known for the multitude of layers and colours in his collection – displayed a more whimsical and softer side.

His pieces were a multitude of neutrals in varying shades of grey, camel, tan, black, navys and creams. Instead of the collection being one that defines “trends” for the season – the collection was amazingly filled with more classic pieces wrapped up in the most beautiful fur coats and cardigans.

While the silhouettes may have been more classic, the materials were an array of different textures – furs, sequins, ans cashmere’s.

Displayed on a rather simplistic set – the space was filled with sounds of the song, “Over the Rainbow” – which added to the final, “vintage” vibe the collection was displaying. It was quite moving.

This collection is a wonderful, feminine, and elegant change from some of the edgier 80’s trends.

In my line of work, there is one piece of everyone’s image that everyone always seems hesitant to change – their hair. Hair is an extension of our fashion sense, personality and lifestyle – it shows who we are!

It’s so much fun to play with – you can choose different colours, styles, and cuts to reflect the various moods we all go through on a day to day basis.

I find however, many women today get stuck in the “hair rut”. They become comfortable with a style they’ve had for ages – and never change it. Either that, or they keep a haircut that perhaps reflected a time in their life where they felt best about themselves. As a result, I’ve seen many women today walking around with mullets, and perms from the trends of years ago – or cuts that are just so boring it kills an entire “look” you’ve worked so hard to put together.

So how important is a haircut and style?

It’s VERY important. Just like clothing – if it’s outdated looking – you will also look outdated. As a result, many people will make the assumption that your job skills are also – or that you’re just “out of touch” with what’s current. Not okay.

My general rule of thumb is that if it’s been 3-5 years and you haven’t at least changed the style of your hair – it’s probably outdated.

This is why so many people love Victoria Beckham – her style has already remained relatively the same – but she’s constantly changing her hair – giving her a fresh edge to whatever look she is striving for.

I’m not saying you have to drastically change your look at each haircut – but play with colours, different textures, bangs, or just how you style your hair! You might be surprised and how much a “good hair day” can affect your mood.

I love runway shows – they are like art in motion for me. When I watch them, it’s like I’ve been sucked into another world for just a moment. The lights, the music, and the beautiful garments put me in awe – and emotional reactions to some of the shows have taken place.

I love runway shows – they are like art in motion for me. When I watch them, it’s like I’ve been sucked into another world for just a moment. The lights, the music, and the beautiful garments put me in awe – and emotional reactions to some of the shows have taken place.

I’ve been creeping WWD lately and have been sneaking a peak at some of the designers pre-fall 2010 collections. I must say – I have been drooling appropriately. However, one I’m particularly taken with is the Christian Dior collection.

John Galliano is a designer that can do no wrong in my eyes. He’s a true designer with creative flair that isn’t afraid of going, over the top. It’s unfortunate that so many designers say how afraid they are of stepping, “outside of the box”. Shame.

For Dior’s pre-fall ‘10 – John has gone with a wartime glamour feel. I’m particularly struck with this collection, as to me, the 40’s was the ultimate in feminine style, elegance, and beautiful silhouettes.

Delicate dresses and skirts in the most beautiful blush pinks and soft browns were paired with more structured jackets in moody army greens.

One piece I really love is the knee high socks that have big gorgeous draping bows on them. Can’t wait to snag a pair of those for myself .

The gowns were also true to the 1940’s theme – body hugging, and elegant, they made my think of the beautiful Ingrid Bergman. She’d suit them perfectly.

*le sigh* I love the 40’s and am so happy the designers have turned away from some of the “more skin is better” trend that we were seeing so much of in the early 2000’s. The return to class and elegance is back.

When I see people truly owning who they are – no excuses – and reflecting that in the way they carry themselves – it’s magic. I almost feel I understand a little bit about that person and what their likes or dislikes may be – or, at least I find it fun to imagine.

There are so many people out there that search magazines, celebrity tabloids, and ... Read More »]]> I love style. I find it to be such a personal reflection of who we are as individuals. I just love it when I’m walking around town and stop in awe over someone’s fashion appeal.

When I see people truly owning who they are – no excuses – and reflecting that in the way they carry themselves – it’s magic. I almost feel I understand a little bit about that person and what their likes or dislikes may be – or, at least I find it fun to imagine.

There are so many people out there that search magazines, celebrity tabloids, and newspapers for pictures on how to emulate someone elses image. I find that as a result, many are either left confused as to what style is there own, or feel like they’ve lost who they are while trying to copy someone else.

I say – start small. Take time and reflect on who you are. Ask yourself: what do you like? What are you drawn towards? What does your lifestyle require?

From there you can play with pieces you may own currently and slowly but surely, you’ll find your own unique style that you can rock anytime, anywhere, and have others stop in awe over how confidently you carry yourself.
