We love fall. It's the gathering season. We start to plan our Thanksgiving menus and Christmas gatherings. If you are like me, you also turn a critical eye on your gathering space, seeing what your guests will see when they aren't eating or watching football.
If a major redo isn't what you have in mind, something as simple as new pillows can pull your look together and give you the fresh feel you want. Furnishings are fashion just as clothing is, so accessorizing and replacing come with the territory.
Even when I'm working on a project for myself, I often fret about using a solid color on a sofa or on bed linens. But when I remember how fun it is to build around it with accessories, texture, and color, I start to formulate a plan.
A few key things look for are durable fabrics and trims, a high quality filler, and a zipper that will allow you to clean the cover if needed. A down insert will feel great, but if you are driven crazy by fluffing pillows, go with a poly fill. Regardless of whether you are purchasing pillows premade or if you are having the pillows custom made, choose fabric and trim that will pass the usage test of your household.
Consider, too, size and color. Don't be afraid to use something larger scale for impact. And a splash of boldness can go a long way in giving a room a new feel.
A consistent good seller for us in the store is Lee Industries' sofa/chaise in a solid base. (There are several different styles, available to see at www.leeindustries.com. Pictured in Mystical Camel, the pillows give it a unique and distinct feel.
The pillows in the red tones, in Pippin Antique stripe and Blossom Red, give it a modern country feel. A rug with anything but the most orange of tones would work, and you could pair it with chairs in brown leather (we show it with cream leather) or a subtle pattern that pulls the reds together.
When paired with pillows in the more subtle blues, the sofa takes on a more subdued feel that could be paired with a more formal look in the companion pieces and accessories. Blue has made a strong showing the past several seasons in home furnishings trends, and the pillows shown here are in Newman Olive and Laser Sage cotton velvet. This look would allow you to use pretty patterned fabric lampshades, and would work with a chair with a cleaner line, perhaps one with a wood frame.
I love the playfulness of the kidney pillow pictured with the pillows in Lancelot Melon. Again, the neutrality of these colors allow for many choices in accessorizing and in your complimentary seating. Leather is such a good staple, not only for the richness it adds in texture and feel, but in the durability and wear as well. Ottoman coffee tables continue to be a great accent, and in leather it makes a nice statement of style. If your cocktail table is wooden, a pair of leather chairs compliment the sofa/chaise perfectly.
Use these same principles in your bedrooms as well for a seasonal decorating update.
Whether you are entertaining or nesting, new pillows can give pieces you already own a new look without a new purchase price!
