Comme des Garçons Spring 2009

Comme des Garçons' collection for Spring 09 includes a series of skirts... for men, of course! Obviously not for every man out there, these skirts are of Gothic inspiration and are worn best by those comfortable with that aesthetic and its traditionally dark and intriguing attire.

What I find mentionable at this latest attempt to skirt the male is this collection's invocation of more traditional menswear -- like the oversized, skirty legs of the otherwise "short" (top right) and the almost-apron visual of the white creation (top left). Upon closer look, these skirt's details reveal even more masculine notions -- such as the "pant leg" seeming on the full skirt (bottom center) and the pocketed seems at the base of the jacket (bottom right) that essentially add a blue-jean pocket to the skirt.

How far will these innovative, masculine touches go in moving the male skirt from freak to chic? Who knows, but these details -- and the fact that skirts are unquestionably comfortable and non-binding -- are making it an easier sell.

Manly Details: The clever embellishment on this skirt gives a "pant leg" illusion.

This chic jacket is the perfect top for a man in skirt, providing a "back pockets" visual.

I totally agree with the fact that these are for the confident man out there, Paul. Talk about making a statement! I dig the loose gaucho style pants. They are like a nice in-between skirt and pant look if that person is not ready for a full blown transition yet.

Great, I love the idea! Is there anywhere online I can buy such pieces?

Bravo for embracing fashion-forward designs! Well James, there is not much resource for Comme des Garcons Homme apparel online let alone runway collections. Which are close to sometimes none. If you really are looking for Comme des Garcons I suggest expand your search to countries where fashions like this is popular, i.e. Japan and Germany.

Another 'smart style' avenue you can explore is have a tailor custom make it for you. Just bring photos. And lastly, approach designers. I suggest contact previous Project Runway designers like Jack Mackenroth, Suede, etc. Good Luck!

Paul
