Move Over Rachael Ray, Dr. Cochran’s Baking Pies! | September 30, 2010

And if you’re wondering what this has to do with mental health? Just taste the pie…

It’s the end of the strawberry season and it’s time to make our ‘last gasp’ pies. So I’m going to share with you my special secret recipe for Strawberry Glace Pie. Now, when I make this I always get rave reviews from my friends and family so take heed, it’s a winner.

Let us begin, shall we, with the crust. You know that old expression, ‘easy as pie’ well they weren’t talking about the crust! So there are two ways to go here. You can either … Read More »

Candy Bar Pie | September 27, 2010

What do you do when you’re asked to bring “something sweet” to a dinner party? Well, if you’re me, you try and narrow it down. I have so many recipes that I’ve already tried and so many I still hope to try some day. The next response is “surprise us”. Wow. Okay.

So it must be decadent because I’m bringing it but what should it be?

I have this big manilla folder that holds recipes I’ve ripped out of various magazines and newspapers over the years. Some are printed emails, too. I started going through the folder, hoping to be inspired by … Read More »

French Apple Custard Pie | January 29, 2010

So you know I’m not really a pie girl. Oh, I like to eat them all right, but making them? Not so much. Most of that I chalk up to my inability to make a pie crust. Using the frozen crust just seems like cheating to someone like me who makes everything from scratch. But honestly, I can’t even get the crust that you manually roll into the pie plate to look right so it’s the frozen crust for me.

I make pies for the holidays. Usually they are pecan, chocolate and pumpkin because those are the crowd pleasers.  Truthfully, if given the choice between … Read More »

Boozy Pumpkin Pie | December 14, 2009

I am not a pumpkin pie kind of gal. Mostly, I dislike the glurping noise it makes when you mix it and the texture of the finished pie. But I was very intrigued when I saw this recipe for Boozy Pumpkin Pie and had to try it.  It was awesome. The beaten egg whites lend a welcome lightness to the finished product and the Canadian Whiskey adds a nice sort of bite to it. I made the traditional pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving but this is an extra special pumpkin pie to make for Christmas.

Start by placing the contents of one … Read More »

Pumpkins Aren’t Just For Carving–Fun Beauty Products For Fall! | October 31, 2009

Pumpkin pie.

Jack o’ lanterns.

“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Thoughts of Halloween wouldn’t be complete without images of the weird-shaped, orange gourd.  All of those holiday pumpkin pies and goodies offer so much more than just window dressing and an excuse to indulge in forbidden treats.

They hold enough anti-aging magic to dazzle even a broomstick-riding witch, especially when applied externally.

How’s that for a Halloween mask?

They’re loaded with beta-carotene, and because of their antioxidant content, including vitamin A and active enzymes, they’re often a main ingredient in peels to brighten and nourish your skin with a natural chemical exfoliation.  And thanks  to its … Read More »
