It’s Better in Leather | August 11, 2011

When I was 18, I put a bumpersticker on my car from a leather boy shop in Boston. Sporting discreet little handcuffs, it read: “It’s Better in Leather.” This really spiffed up my uber-dorky VW Dasher! My feeling of cool was cut short when, unsurprisingly, my parents removed it. I was hugely annoyed at their bourgeois mentality but soon realized that suburban New England was not ready for me…or my pretentious leather.

My love affair with leather began long before my bumper sticker and continues long after. Gone is the 1980s, and 1990s, and 2000s and with the decades, … Read More »

Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Trends | February 18, 2011

We review the women’s clothing trends to look out for in Spring Summer 2011.

’70s Glam

The 1970s is the latest period to come roaring back into fashion. Look out for bohemian and sophisticated glamour, including high waist bands and the return of the blouse. Also, dig out those bell bottoms and Capri pants, which will be on trend this summer.

Embellishments

In 2011, embellishments will be more important than ever, with that customized look giving an edge to any outfit. In particular, tassels can add that touch of retro glamour to bags and other accessories.

There’s a homemade feel to … Read More »

70’s Inspired Trends For 2011 | January 27, 2011

Everyone loves a little vintage vibe in his or her wardrobes; it simplifies the essence of an era gone by. In the past we have seen an assortment of looks that have taken inspiration from the 20s and 30s, however, this season seems to be set on re-inventing the 1970s.

However, this year there are several variations of the 70’s trend, ranging in style from a 70’s boho look to a more sophisticated 70’s style.

If you are someone that oozes a certain air of defiance then the 70’s trend is certainly the one for you, this is mainly due to … Read More »

Look Slim, Stay Chunky | December 24, 2010

I have always been a big fan of the oversized and chunky. That is why I am absolutely thrilled that oversized and chunky cardigans are hot this season. Finally we can all throw those puny little cardigans to the back of the wardrobe and indulge in a more warm and cosy overthrow.

There are no limits on the style, going from knee length to the hip, which is great to hide all those unwanted bulges and indulge in some naughty treats for Autumn/Winter.

To set the trend, wear your oversized cardigan with slimmer bottoms; skinny jeans or leggings tucked into tall boots … Read More »

2011 Hair Trends | December 23, 2010

We’re not far off the New Year now so we really need to be figuring out what we’re going to be looking for in the style stakes next year. Out with the old and in with the new, our New Year’s resolution is to look, and therefore feel, better than ever.

The first style we came across on next year’s catwalks was a new take on a classic do. The chignon, braided! Simple as that, dry and straighten hair with a ghd flat iron and sweep back into as high a pony tail as … Read More »

Eye Makeup Trends for Fall/Winter 2011 | October 26, 2010

This image is from the Junko Yoshioka s/s 2011 fashion show at Trump Tower. I kept the look very glamorous, yet simple. Here are some big trends for makeup for fall/winter 2011, and most likely the trends will stay around for summer of 2011 (with some small modifications, of course.)

1. The biggest trend in makeup: focus on the lashes and the top eyeliner! In this picture I have individual false lashes on the model (mainly on the outer corner of her eye). I also used 3 layers of mascara (carefully applied) to really make the lashes look lustrous. I did … Read More »

Dreaming of Marc Jacobs | March 5, 2010

Marc Jacobs recently showed his Fall/Winter 2010 collection at New York fashion week. The entire collection was absolutely stunning. MJ, who is normally known for the multitude of layers and colours in his collection – displayed a more whimsical and softer side.

His pieces were a multitude of neutrals in varying shades of grey, camel, tan, black, navys and creams. Instead of the collection being one that defines “trends” for the season – the collection was amazingly filled with more classic pieces wrapped up in the most beautiful fur coats and cardigans.

While the silhouettes may have been more classic, the materials … Read More »

Wartime Glamour | February 10, 2010

I love runway shows – they are like art in motion for me. When I watch them, it’s like I’ve been sucked into another world for just a moment. The lights, the music, and the beautiful garments put me in awe – and emotional reactions to some of the shows have taken place.

I’ve been creeping WWD lately and have been sneaking a peak at some of the designers pre-fall 2010 collections. I must say – I have been drooling appropriately. However, one I’m particularly taken with is the Christian Dior collection.

John Galliano is a designer that can do … Read More »

How Strong Are Your Shoulders? | January 27, 2010

It’s a flashback to the 1980′s, powersuits with the reintroduction of strong shoulders. Although this seasons interpretation of strong shoulders is more sophisticated and dramatic ,it still conveys the message of strength and femininity.

The best way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe is to choose a strong shouldered look in a neutral colour. Stick with black, white, gray or even beige, but don’t try to wear a strong shoulder with an even stronger colour like blue, red or green.

It is the perfect trend for a more formal event or a day at the office.  If … Read More »

Designer Steals! | December 12, 2009

Most people nowadays are on the hunt for designer clothing – and not only because they are beautiful and exquisitely crafted, but they can make you look fabulous also. The issue for most is the price that comes along with these labels.

As a result, chain stores have popped up everywhere to satisfy the fashionable, while still being kind to their wallets – but the quality disappears.

So is that our only option? Heavier prices or no quality?

Thanks to the beauty of the internet, I can happily say, “no”.

Almost everyone alive today has heard of “ebay” – I myself, do not use … Read More »

Not Animal Tested? | December 10, 2009

For years now, there have been countless protests to scientists testing products for humans on animals. I mean after all – who on earth would want to harm some of the sweetest creatures?

Shoppers have become more savvy as the years go by, and are constantly on the hunt for products that haven’t been tested on animals. Many manufacturers have become aware of this trend – which is a fabulous thing!

But how smart are we as consumers?

The most troublesome fact is that manufacturers get away with A LOT just by playing with words in their campaigns or placing certain labels on … Read More »
