16086859kathivaughn1020200822221PM.jpgSweet P Vaughn started as a young kid sketching new outfits for Sonny & Cher as she watched them on TV. I guess I thought I could do better than Bob Mackie. Cher was a big inspiration then. I loved her ethnic, unique look and felt she was a strong independent woman. She was gorgeous.

Then my mom would make clothes for me according to my specifics ideas about print, color and silhouette. As I got older I started making my own clothes and took sewing at School, where I excelled at it. I was very inspired by vintage and would shop in thrift store way before it became the norm. I remember my mom wondering why I bought all these old clothes. One day to our surprise I ended up with a skirt she gave to the Goodwill. It had the label from Illinois where she bought it and her hem stitch, she was then sold on the vintage thing .I went to Trade Technical College in LA and dropped out of school when I started my first line "Sweet P". I had that business for 5 years before I decided to end it and learn more about the business of Fashion. I then went to work at bebe for 4 years where I learned so much about Production, Marketing  and Merchandising. I decided to do my own thing again. I did a really cute sleepwear line with a friend "Pomme" for 3 years to learn sleepwear is a small market. The week I closed my business Project Runway called me and asked me to audition for the show.

Where does Sweet P draw inspiration for her designs? My inspiration comes from many different sources. Vintage, Nature, Fabric, and people on the street. The last collection I did was inspired by my husband/artist paintings.

Her best selling item was a beaded chiffon top she did while working at bebe; it was a bestseller for a year and a half. I was not working there anymore when the bebe lawyers called me because Forever 21 knocked it off and they needed me to help with the suit. I thought it was great they knocked it off so long after I originally designed it.

Her favorite experience so far was having a runway show at Bryant Park courtesy of Project Runway. The whole Project Runway experience was great for me.

PULP-LAB-049.jpgSweet P has so many plans for the future. The first is the launch of the collaboration between me and my husband Sage Vaughn. It is titled "Ghosts in the Garden. I am very proud of these garments being works of art. It is a capsule collection of limited edition garments incorporating Sage's artwork. The launch party is in Seattle on Nov. 1st and the collection goes on sale that night at the event (sort of a cross between an art opening and a party) and online at pulplab.com.We also did t-shirts and an accessories, cuffs made of wool felt and leather. I look forward to doing more collections like this for different boutiques around the world.

I have done work for MTV and would like to do more fashion reporting with them. I have been on the radio twice (indie 103.1FM ) and am contemplating doing a regular gig with them. I am also looking into licensing. I have done speaking engagements and have one coming up in Boston on Nov. 8th I write for Celebuzz and will continue that as well. There are other things happening that are a secret at this time but as soon as I can talk about it I will.
