First, at the heart of Sugarluxe is a style of artwork that personifies positive attributes - important stuff like confidence and kindness.
It takes extreme dedication to make a dream come true. My dream is based on an eternally optimistic idea that one day we will all accept each other for exactly who we are.
I think part of my purpose has been to try to reflect the things I find so amazing in each person I meet. That's why I am compelled to create and it's through meaningful relationships that I draw most of my inspiration. To me, everything, every outcome, is based on the perception of the situation. I choose to look at life (and people) from a very colorful point of view and that's the philosophy upon which the Sugarluxe Brand was built.
Speaking to the art itself, I think so many individuals identify with the characters because they ARE us...seemingly simplistic on the surface, but beyond that is something much more complex. Despite our composure and outward appearance, we're all dealing with a lot of chaos, and through my work, I hope to convey the message that beauty is more than skin deep.
I launched the business in my loft and it took 6 months online before I got my first store. Admittedly, I never went to any boutiques or pitched my products to a single soul at that time because I am pretty shy and not a salesperson at all (like most artists!)
What I had on my side (since trade and trunk shows aren't my thing, either) is an insatiable desire to learn. I taught myself everything I could about HTML, SEO, CSS...the technical side of commerce. Had I put that aspect of the business in someone else's hands initially, I don't think we'd be where we are today. I call it - "pounding the virtual pavement".
Three years later, I've outgrown three studios, we're in 1000+ stores from here to Australia, we have two national big box retail accounts, I have a permanent installation in the world famous Hotel Des Arts, Sugarluxe is one of the TOP selling downloaded catalogues of mobile phone art in the world. Oh yes, and we just completed a new graphics application for the Iphone.
My work is owned by A-List celebrities, and my most popular painting FABULOUS hangs in the bedroom of pop star, Miley Cyrus. It's crazy...the kind of attention that stuff brings. Sugarluxe can now be seen in so many places; it blows my mind, sometimes.
