Chic Challenge Revisited

| | Comments (89)
dreamstime_5984613.jpggiveaway.gifTwo years ago I started my first blog.  I had no idea what I was going to write about or why anyone would even be interested in reading it.  My mom was the first and only comment for quite some time until I started this little thing called the "Chic Challenge."

My first question was... In 1981, this Chic Gal proudly sported the popular "Farrah Fawcett" hairstyle. What other famous icon's hairdo did I mimic in my teen years?  I got eleven answers to my question and gave away my first fabulous prize.

My second question was...In the late 1970's, my mom and I collected this stylish and popular brand of shoes. Mom wore the flats, while I wore the platforms. I even had them in a pair of boots! Can you name this brand of shoe and the color of my favorite pair?  OK, that one stumped people.

So I was off to question #3...In the late 1980's, I worked on Greenwich Avenue in a well known designer's store. My closet was filled with floral dresses, short corduroy skirts, sailor dresses, tights, petticoats and high-necked blouses. When I quit, I couldn't wait to throw it all away! Who was the designer? In addition to women's clothing, what other 2 lines was this designer famous for?  Seriously, is it really that hard?

Apparently yes because my best friend actually emailed me to complain.  What? No one is up for a challenge anymore?  I threw in the proverbial towel and decided that I wouldn't torture people with my crazy questions ever again...until now.  Knowing how incredibly intelligent Chic Galleria readers are, I decided that it was time to pull out the completely useless trivia that seems to rattle in my brain from time to time.

Think it's time for the "Chic Challenge" to be dusted off and revisited.  Think we'll open it up to reader submissions too.  Yes...I've got prizes...tons of them...and lots of stuff tossed in the virtual junk drawer.

We'll start with something easy...

In your opinion, who is the greatest band of all time?

To get this ball rolling, Chic Galleria is giving a $15 Starbucks giftcard to 1 lucky Weekly Newsletter subscriber or someone who leaves an answer here.  Ends April 9 midnight EST. Winner chosen at random.

I would have to say that in my opinion, Queen is the best band of all time. Why? Their music is absolutely timeless and no matter how much time passes, more and more generations of people are being turned onto them and listening to their music throughout their lives. We Will Rock You is there for all of the school sporting events people attend and Bohemian Rhapsody is a song everyone has to admit to rocking out to and I'd dare to say people were doing it before Wayne's World. It is probably also the reason why they were the first band to be entered into the songwriter's hall of fame.

The Beatles! I love how they grew and changed their music as the got older and experienced new things - their sound always changing. They have given us so many songs to choose from and we can accompany many of their songs with times and fond memories from our past. I don't believe any other band can top The Beatles.

The Beatles, most definitely. They were not only gifted songwriters and musicians, they were truly innovative, and the first band to utilizing string orchestra in a recording. They released more than a dozen albums, many with multiple hits, and not just filler or cover music, in fact, their first album contained nothing but Lennon/McCartney compositions In 1964 the Beatles held the Top 5 spots on Billboard’s singles chart. They were the first band to do a stadium concert (Shea Stadium 1965. I could go on and on!

Sorry Beth, no decent URL to throw up right now. But U2 is the greatest band of all time, for the following reasons:
1.Longevity: 30 years and counting with the original line-up. Most of their contemporaries who have been around that long are touring with a new drummer and half a dozen rotating bassists (if they even have the original singer) These guys started at the high school they all attended in northside Dublin, and they've never lost sight of that. 2.Their popularity is equal in nearly every continent. 3.They learn from their mistakes. For them, reinvention is not a cliche. 4.Graciousness: They admire their peers, they thank everyone, they act like each concert and TV appearance is something special. They can remember details for nearly every show they've ever played. If I included their activism and distinctions I'd crash your site, so I'm done! Thanks for reading.

The best band of all time is the Dave Matthews Band! I have seen him 3 times in concert and he gets better every time. I don't own 1 CD that I don't love!

the beatles definitely! :D

okay, I bet I know which one a special person would choose????

**************************DURAN DURAN**************************

I totally agree!

I have to agree - Duran Duran!! Wild Boys, Rio, Girls on Film, Notorius, Reflex, View to a Kill...Love them. My favorite band ever, and they are still going strong today. I have been to 3 of their concerts and they are awesome live, so fun to watch and listen to!

DURAN DURAN!!!! They are a part of my soul! And I thank this fab band for bringing so many wonderful friends into my life!

I am torn between the Clash and the Beatles. The Clash for there breaking of musical barriers and the Beatles because they were pure genius!!! Every, EVERY album was completely unique and fantastic!

Eagles...hands down!

OK....so I'm old, and ancient, and out of touch, but the greatest band ever was The Glenn Miller Band...even if most of you have no clue who he was or any of his music.....ask you parents or more likely your grandparents and they'll agree.

The Beatles

I have to vote for the Beatles. They influenced and changed the world and we are still feeling the affects. Can you make it through a day without hearing something about the Beatles?

Best band today is U2. For all the reasons that Brook listed.

Honorable mention, Nirvana

Hard to choose one, because the genre and generation heavily influences the group I would choose. But after seeing them/ him in concert, I realized how his music reaches out to everyone and has the most loyal fans: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. ("And I'm freeeeee....freeeee falling!!")

I would also venture to say that The Doors are the best, and yes, The Beatles go down in history. Blondie and No Doubt are amazing groups with female lead signers, too...

What about the Rolling Stones? Nobody is showing them any love =( I remember your giveaways from about a year ago. I loved seeing all of the cool things you'd put up for grabs each Friday. Congrats on how far you've come!!

Thanks Leeann! Trying this again with lots of new goodies....some big ones as well as small. :)

I'm a loyal Beatles fan, and will love them forever.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I'd have to say the greatest band of all time is Pink Floyd! Their music is still as cool today as it was back in the day!

The Beatles started it all. The Who brought it to a new level. And currently U2 maintains what a good band should be.

I would say The Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time. In my opinion, no band has surpassed The Beatles. I don't know if any ever will. Thanks for the giveaway!

It has to be the Beatles, for their groundbreaking innovation.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and choose a band no one else has mentioned....The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think the lyrics to their music are all amazing. My second choice would have to be the Beatles. Thanks!

I subscriber to the newsletter. I have to say the best band of all time is U2 or Journey.

I think Chicago is the greatest band :)

I would have to say for a band it would be the Beatles. But for all time performer it's Elvis hands down!
alsdgravenhof@hotmail.com

well i am gonna say the beatles becuz they literally changed america's views on music. that takes a lot!!!

I feel the Rolling Stones have proven to be the best Rock band out there

Its hard to pick one- for me its a mood thing but I guess if I had to pick one I'd go with INXS it takes me back to the good parts of highschool and my teenage years.

Oh man, choosing just one is so difficult. hmmmm

I'll just go with my personal favourite band which is U2. I've been following them since the late 80s, solid music, love them.

Thanks

Beatles, Chicago, ZZTop, Santana, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, all great long lasting bands with many many fans. To pick a favorite is tough. Hubby's favorite is Credence, my favorite would be Santana. It's all subjective and true for each.

Cake, no question. I love almost every song they've ever made. Plus their albums are all awesome played straight through!

The Beatles, no doubt.

i think i'd have to go with u2
they reinvent themselves constantly

Guided by Voices! They have such an incredible range of pieces, and so many amazingly subtle and fun songs. I love Mag Earwig.

that would be U2... HANDS DOWN!

Mcfly is the BEST band ever! Their lyrics are brilliant and so heartfelt. Plus I am a sucker for those cute English accents! ;)

This is so easy for me. U2...period. They have transcended decades AND generations.
Thanks!

The best band ever is The Rolling Stones. THey have been around forever and stayed togther. Their music is timeless and they continue putting out great music.

The Beatles - no other band has ever left such a dramatic mark in history.

The greatest band of all time is a tie between NSYNC AND Backstreet Boys. You just can beat those two best boy bands ever!

Hmmmm.... hard to pick just one! I'd say Chicago, they made decades of music loved by all... and it crossed different genres!!!

:)

This is a really hard question. I love The Beatles and U2 (and Duran Duran and DMB), but my vote would go to R.E.M. I've loved them for 2 decades and just adore Michael Stipe's voice.

Eagles is the best..

I would have to say U2, but to pick the best of all time...so hard. Dave Matthew's band ranks up there too

I would need to go with the Beatles. Their music changed so much from when they started. How many groups since then can claim that the Beatles were an influence on them?

Tough question, there are so many! I think Journey is the all time greatest, we were singing and remembering their songs last night after watching Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler.

As much as I love Dave Matthews, I'll have to say that the greatest band ever was the Beatles. No one will ever come close to having the same everlasting influence that the Beatles had.

I would have to say the beatles. They have made history.

I have to say the Beatles. Their music lives on today, is covered by many others, and I think they will never be forgotten.

I am sure that everyone is going to say the Beatles. Sorry, don't hate me, but I am not a Beatles fan.

My favorite band would be Chicago.

Thanks for the fun,

The greatest band of all time would have to be Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band. There I said it!
Zoe0825@verizon.net

hmm.... The Doors

I love U2. Always have. Always will.

When I was younger I thought the Beatles were old fogey. I was young and anything my mom liked had to stink, right? Well, now that I am older I think The Beatles are just amazing. I love the lyrics, the music, the message. Like them or not EVERYONE knows who they are and that has to say something! So yeah, I am totally going with The Beatles.

The Beatles! Of course! lol

I hate the Beatles- so I am going with Eagles! I love Hotel California!

jill.watkins@gmail.com

Wow, there are so many names going through my head right now, but when it comes to ALL TIME, the Beatles have it, hands down.

The greatest band of all time is the Beatles...I mean, is there any question about that?!?!?

The Beatles as Paul's Magnificent mind & writing was once compared to that of Shakespeare or so I've heard it said, however U2 is fabulous also. rangrace(at)hotmail.com

The beatles are without a doubt a great band, however the greatest band to ever walk this earth is Led Zeppelin!!!

The Rolling Stones!

I have to agree with Queen

The Beatles by far was the greatest band ever.
Taking a stab at the "70's shoe that you and your mom wore.
was it the earth shoe?

Greatest band of all time... Journey. Hands down. =0)

I am so sad to see no one mentioned Aerosmith.. am I the one lonely person that will still drive over 100 miles to see Stephen Tyler work a microphone? *sigh*

I just wanted to let you know that I blogged about your Chic Challenge: http://womantribune.com/who-is-the-greatest-band-of-all-time-a-chic-challenge

Jackson 5, they've made tons of songs that are still relevant to this day and have great music.

I say the Eagles or the Beach Boys!

My husband would be very upset if I didn't say U2 here!!! His all time favourite band. They have been topping the charts for a long time and show no sign of slowing down. They continue to be relevant (to steal the American Idol judges' favourite word!!) with each new album.

marin (dot) obrien {at} g mail

As a hard-rocker to me there is nobody more genius than Metallica. They went through hell and back with James' alcohol addiction a few years back. I'm excited to see them in Las Vegas in December. Maybe Metallica isn't your typical chick-band, but I just love em.

I just want to say....JOURNEY!!

That is a really tough question...hmmm..I will go with U2...

I think I'd have to say: U2. Partly because they're such a talented bunch. Partly because of Bono's influence beyond the band to better our world...

Going to go with the Rolling Stones

The Wesley Willis Fiasco. Hands down.

However, I love the other commenter who mentioned The Glen Miller Band! I think Glen Miller needs some more love here in the comments.

Thank you for this awesome giveaway! :)

I would personally say Tool, I think it is amazing the thought that goes into their music from start to finish. Such as Lateralus with the Fibonnaci sequence embedded in it. Its rock music for thinkers and I love them, plus Marnards voice has such intense emotion behind it.

The Eagles or The Allman Brothers, can't decide.

Hmmmm I'd have to say U2!! They are making a positive difference in the world through their amazing music!

I'd have to say U2. They have influenced the world over. They help out other people and are very humble and grateful. They love the fans. Their music speaks volumes and stands for something.

The BeeGees were our favorite group. I'm dating myself here. Thanks for having the wonderful giveaway.

I would also have to say the Beatles - no one has every equaled them.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Love them!

Thanks!

u2

I'd have to say the best band of all times would have to be "Aerosmith" or "The Eagles". If my husband were to answer this question he would have said, "Queen", but his ain't answering this question. :D LOL!

What a great question. Very genius idea.
Groovewoman

best band of all time? Hanson. they managed to take humming, turn it into MmmBop and end up still being famous 10+ years later. ;)

best band b/c of talent of all time? The Doors. They are the only band to bring total peace with each song, they are sexy yet serene. Just fabulous.
