Alex and Ani's handcrafted jewelry adorns women in inspiring, spiritual designs made from recycled metals. Produced in the United States, the line reflects the concept of jewelry as eco-friendly works of art--a concept that owner/designer Carolyn Rafaelian is steadfastly dedicated to. Celebrities who have worn her pieces include Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Oprah Winfrey.

Offered in precious metals or the company's signature Russian Gold and Russian Silver finishes, the pieces contains sacred stones and symbols. Some of them also contain Alex and Ani's Signature Expandable Concept, a patented technology that trades traditional jewelry clasps for a sliding mechanism that makes necklaces, bracelets, and rings adjustable--no more worries about getting the perfect fit.

The company's concept of Charity By Design allows for proceeds from the sale of the jewelry line to go toward charitable causes such as relief efforts for the survivors of natural disasters and wildlife preservation efforts and natural disaster relief.

Alex and Ani is sold at stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Fred Segal,  and Henri Bendel. It is also available on www.AlexAndAni.com

So.Boo Handbags Fit Your Personality

| | Comments (4)
nina-thumb-300x449-thumb-300x449.jpgThere are two reasons why you need a So.Boo handbag.  First, most of us do not have the means to spend what equates to a mortgage payment on a purse. Secondly, you want a bag that fits your personality. And you would prefer that this combination of affordability and style not be at the expense of some poor child in a third world country.

Meet Julia Jackson, the one-woman wonder who designs and makes each custom-ordered handbag to your specifications.  Not only do you get to choose your outer fabric, but also the lining, handles or straps, and even a touch of "bling" if your heart desires.  (As an added surprise, if you'd like, Julia will add a special surprise touch of her own to add to your bag's unique appeal.)

Even more amazing than her creations are the prices she asks for each of these customized bags and the quick delivery of your order. Prices range from about $50 to $200 dollars. Turn-around time typically runs between three to seven days.

These are two of Julia's most requested styles:

The "Nina" Style is a smaller bag with evening functions in mind.

beverley.JPGThe "Beverly" Style is sure to become one of your favorite daily bags... big enough to carry all of your essentials (and then some) and it is a wonderful way to go from the office straight to a night on the town.

Here is a bit of background on Julia and her company. Julia began her business five years ago, making bags here and there for friends who admired her eye and craftsmanship. As her reputation grew by word of mouth, so too did her business. Two years ago, she left the real estate business to focus on So.Boo Bags full time.

What does So.Boo mean?  "Boo" is Julia's childhood nickname (and still is to this day with her closest family and friends). When people saw her bags, they could see her personality. Soon friends were calling her creations "so Boo" and the name stuck.

Friends and family are not the only ones who admire Julia's lovely work. Her bags have been snapped up at charity auctions, including benefits for the Kidney Texas, Inc. and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Still not convinced that you need a So.Boo bag?  Well, the testimonials are almost as numerous as her exclusive designs.  Says Amy S.:

DSCN2593.JPG"Not only are So.Boo Bags unique and sassy, but so is their creator Julia Jackson.  She's an absolute dream to work with.  Julia keeps you involved to ensure you get exactly what you want.  Each design is fun yet functional and the workmanship is outstanding.  My only issue is trying to choose which of the original designs and delicious fabrics will be my next purchase.  I currently own nine of these fun, funky bags and am very excited about expanding my collection."

So... now the only question is:  What are you waiting for?  Visit Julia's So.Boo website to see more of her work or give her a call at 214.205.2457.

Looking for some old-fashioned elegance? Designer Blair Nadeau's label, Feathered, offers hair pins, hats, and feather fascinators that will make you stand out in a crowd.

Inspired by feathers, one of nature's most luxurious natural textiles, each piece is handcrafted and custom made for each customer using the finest materials imported to Canada from the United States and England.

Blair was born and raised in London, Ontario and was destined to succeed in the art world from the moment she picked up her first crayon. She stumbled into a love of fashion at the age of 15, both on her own accord and from the influence of her fashionable mother and grandmother. From that moment on, she pursued her love of fabric and sequins, studying two years of textile art and printmaking at London, Ontario's Beal Art school and then embarking on four years at Toronto's Ryerson University's prestigious fashion design school.

"I always struggled with where I fit in, in the fashion world," she says. "As much as I loved sewing and designing clothing, I didn't feel as though that was where, creatively, I belonged. I've always enjoyed tedious hand work: beading, sketching, hand embroidery, and painting. And I've always been infatuated with hats and headwear."

While in London, England, on a buying trip, Blair stumbled upon a fascinator/hat boutique in Selfridge's on Oxford street and began a love affair with all things feathered.

Lady_Gossip - Blair.jpg

"When I discovered fascinators in England, they had not made their mark on North American fashion yet. I fell completely head over heels in love with them," she recalls. "After about eight months of teaching myself different techniques, I felt as if I had finally found my place in the fashion industry. I officially launched Feathered at the end of April 2009 and it's been going fabulously ever since!"

"Trying to come up with the right name for the company was a bit of a process," she explains. "I wanted a name that represented the main materials of the pieces, but I like things that are short, simple and modern. Eventually late one night, I came up with 'Feathered.' I thought that it was the perfect name as it embodied the materials used and explained the concept of the pieces all in one simple word."

Blair's April 2009 collection, Modern Vintage English Luxe, was inspired by the luxury of European life and of early Hollywood decadence. "I intially started the company specializing in cocktail hats and feathered hair bands/clips, but have seen an increasing demand for smaller hair pins," she says. "I have a fabulous hair pin titled England's Belle that is available for giveaway in black and white. It would be great for adding a little spice to a casual day wear ensemble or adding flare to great evening look. I am also beginning to dabble in bridal with feathered hair accessories, hats, and Russian veiling is becoming increasingly popular for bridal wear."

Blair's merchandise is available in boutiques in Toronto; customers can also view and order pieces on BlairNadeau.com. All designs can be modified with different jewels, shells, pearls, and feather colors. A two-week lead time is required for each meticulously created piece.

England's Belle - Black and White.jpg

Chic Galleria and Blair Nadeau are giving away this gorgeous hair piece to one lucky Chic Galleria reader.  How do I win you ask? Just visit www.BlairNadeau.com and check out all her incredible feathered pieces.  Come back here and leave a comment.  Do you have a special event you would love to wear this to? We want to hear about it!

Ends June 28th midnight EST.

Congratulations to Peggy Gorman~Winner!

I have to tell you all that when I received this hair piece for the giveaway, I was in awe!  I asked Blair how she would personally recommend wearing it.  The winner of this is a very lucky gal!

"It can be worn a variety of ways.  Myself personally, since I always wear my hair down, I pull a piece of hair from the front and towards the back (boho like) and secure the pin in the hair towards the back of my head. Sometimes I pin it towards the front of my head holding back my hair behind my ears or holding back my bangs, or I just throw it in my hair at the side of my head, not holding anything...A lot of people have been pinning them into updos for weddings", says Blair.

Web Site Keeps Moms Stylish

| | Comments (1)
logo-sign.jpg

Tammy Gibson, a mother in Redlands, CA, owned an online retail boutique for expecting and new moms prior to starting her successful blog A Mom in Red High Heels

"I really felt there was a need to encourage moms to keep up their beauty routines during the early days of motherhood, as well as wearing fitted clothes that are stylish," she explains. "Discovering retail was not my calling, I wanted to continue sharing a message that I felt was important, so I started A Mom in Red High Heels to empower moms through beauty and style."

"I am inspired by other moms, my own experiences, and of course the beauty and fashion worlds. I think with the right clothes, beauty routine, and hairstyle, a woman feels better about herself and as a result of the great confidence, she tends to be a better mom."

"The three special issues that moms face: lack of sleep, lack of time for herself, and a lack of budget," says Tammy. "A Mom in Red High Heels offers up beauty and style tips that moms can actually work into their hectic schedules to look effortlessly fantastic."

"Beauty Product Reviews is a popular content area on the site. I have a team of moms that help review a variety of beauty products and we always note the 'Mom Value' for each product. As a product junkie, I have a ton of products from a variety of price points but other moms may not enjoy playing with products the way I do. They need to know what is worth their money, which products are multi-taskers and where the products are available. My mom panel team works to bring that information to the site."

"Hair content is always very popular also! Far too often moms end up in the 'ponytail rut.' We offer a hairstyle makeover tool where readers can 'try on' new styles. We also make hairstyle makeover suggestions! A couple of moms have taken our advice and gotten some really great new looks!"

"The future holds limitless opportunities, starting with the relationships the site already has," she says. "I've recently joined the Beauty Bloggerati

on DailyMakeover.com which is 'an elite group of beauty bloggers from across the country who scoop the latest trends, spill insider tips, and are addicted to reviewing products. They sniff, slather, smear, blend, buff, and blow-dry to bring you the latest beauty news every day.' I anticipate a lot of new opportunities with this relationship! I am also a part of Total Beauty's Blog Community, which has aided in building relationships with brands and learning more about professional blogging. I am also a Dictator for LuckyToes.com, a shoe shopping gallery put out by CitySearch."

"I am currently looking for mom bloggers in the New York and LA areas to help attend beauty/fashion events so that we can cover more news for the readers," she says. "If you know any, e-mail me! My hope is to make A Mom in Red High Heels THE go-to beauty/fashion site for moms!"

"Finally, I do plan to write a book based on our site content. My husband is a good writer and has taken a variety of courses in writing books. I hope to enlist his help on the project after both my kids are in school fulltime."

Thumbnail image for TWILIGHT-GARDEN-LARGE-HANDBAG-PURSE-FRONT-70005-l4.jpggiveaway.gifSpirited Style has launched new website with a focus on handbags and accessories. Handbags are still made in small batches for those who want an alternative to the big mass-produced brands. Distribution via select retail outlets begins. The best is yet to come!!!  As you look through this site you'll see that the love of bold colors and textures and wonderful combinations of fabrics, trims and embellishments. Each patchwork handbag is made using multiple fabrics and trims. The mod flower prints of the 60s and 70s and wild abstract designs of the 80s often influence my designs.

Founder and designer, Kristin Elliott "The Queen of Patchwork" grew up in the Chicago area and long ago developed a love of fashion. Kristin went to design school and learned the ins and outs of clothing design and sample production working in the sample room of a dress manufacturing company. She also worked in retail fashion and taught fashion design. All along the way, she was always tinkering with fabrics and other materials and creating her own designs. She began selling them at local art fairs and on the Internet. One thing led to another, and Kristin slowly started getting orders from all over the United States and eventually from many other countries as well. Kristin is married and has a beautiful little girl who loves to help mom in her design studio.

bag - solo (2).jpgAfter a few years of struggling with dementia, my grandma Shirley passed a few weeks ago. And my heart is broken - just as many of you have felt when someone you love feels snatched from your life.

However, through her accessories, I am able to feel even more connected to her legacy of style.

During her funeral, I wore her pearls, and these days, I make it a point to wear one of her necklaces or bracelets every day. Her gentle touch still touches me, literally. I realize how fortunate I am to be apart of my grandma Shirley's journey.

Her style has always been impeccable, inspirational, and completely her own. I remember when she bought me a red knit sweater from Ralph Lauren when I was 13 years old, but I told her that I didn't really need it. (Even then I was budget-conscious!) And I remember her saying to me: "Honey, you should also have at least one quality piece in your closet." To this day, I follow her philosophy.

Bag on the wall (2).jpg
I was also able to get one of her shi-shi beaded purses that she used to have aligned on her upstairs wall. It was like a museum of purses! So following in my grandma Shirley's footsteps, I am starting to do the same. In this pic, you will also notice how I purposely placed the bag beneath the Obamas - another legacy in the making. I felt it to be more than appropriate.

Spring is just around the corner, and the flavorful colors this coming season are probably making your mouth water.  For women who are confident enough to wear neon shades of yellow, tangerine, lime, and pink, head to toe are most likely basking in their options. But what about those who fear fashion that is attention-grabbing? Working bright shades and blog prints into your wardrobe doesn't have to be a headache or impossible. Nope! Just breathe, count to 20, and let go of your self-doubt; because the fabulous aspect of fashion is diversity. Believe me, there are numerous ways that you can add color to your outfits without feeling self-conscious and silly.

Here are 10 Ways to Brighten Up Your Basics:

Thumbnail image for heidi and spencer.jpg1. Shoes: Colored stilettos, peep-toe flat sandals, wedge heels, boots, platforms, and even flip-flop sandals add a special, surprise touch to your outfit. Whether worn with jeans or a vintage dress, shoes can do more than just make or break an outfit - they can complement the rest of your pieces.

2. Scarves: Some women are still trying to figure out the best way to wear a scarf. But what about the color or print to gravitate towards? Once you are aware of the best shades for your skin (remember how close this piece is to your face), have fun with this sophisticated trend.

3. Earrings: Whether you are all about studs, are hip to big hoops, or are always on the lookout for sexy, dangly chandeliers, adding color to your everyday outfits is simple with a chic pair of earrings.

4. Necklaces: Spring runway shows are showing that big is better when it comes to necklaces. Show your personality with a turquoise stone, a yellow taxi cab necklace from Betsey Johnson, or colored ribbons intertwined with chains!

rihanna - pink headband.jpg 5. Headbands: Whether you want to add some sass to your short bob or are seeking a way to hold back your curls without having to use a scrunchie, a bold red, pink, or polka dot headband can definitely add some fun to your fashion. (Bandanas rolled up like headbands are great too! That is my weekend staple.)

6. Skirts: The type of skirt you choose, of course, depends on your body shape and size. A bold red A-line cut style or a knee-length, prairie skirt with woven yellow and green designs will provide you with a feminine flair while making a statement that skirts can be anything but boring.
eva mendes - coral dress.jpg
7. Dresses: Springtime is such a wonderful to experiment with styles and feel carefree! Silk, drapey dresses were a hot item on the runway for this coming season...but is that you? Visit your local retail shops to see the renditions that are available and affordable, and try on, try on, try on.

8. Blouses: So if a colored or print dress is a bit much for you, a bright-colored blouse may be a safer bet for you. A hot pink tee or a one-shoulder polyester-cotton blouse paired up with jeans or a black pant will still exert your confidence and show flair!

karry washington - yellow belt.jpg9. Belts: On top of a dress or creating more of a svelte shape to a boxy blouse; a belt in a gold, silver, turquoise, or even white will revitalize an all-black outfit. Contrasting bright colors (such as a purple belt and a red blouse) will also give your outfit some amazing flavor, with a little couture and lots of fun written all over it.

vj - yaya - purple bag.jpg10. Handbags: I prefer my big, black Jessica Simpson bag for my everyday work purse, but I enjoy fancying up my nights out with a gold, pink, or banana-colored clutch. Just because a purse is a practical item for a woman to have; the color and print you choose should be one that makes you smile.

bagets.jpgDig 'N' Swap is "the easy and fun way to swap fashionable clothes and accessories with people who share your passion for fashion!"  Those of us who need a wardrobe spruce up but don't have the funds in this horrible economy, will find the Dig N Swap concept a suitable alternative to spending money.

Dig N Swap was founded by two UCLA graduates, Li Qiu and Ibe Elbouchikhi who saw an opportunity to turn a living room party into a full-blown online concept.  Li had attended a clothing swap party hosted by a friend and thought the idea was genius.  She loved it so much, she wondered how she could grow the idea to be an online tool with more participants and more swap opportunities.  She brought the idea to Ibe who has a background in technology products management and in over a year, they launched the Dig 'N' Swap platform.

DignSwap.jpgLi and Ibe have big plans for the future.  They are planning a U.K. launch in the next few weeks since receiving messages from many users abroad wanting this service their respective countries.  "We have users from over 30 countries though only the U.S. is supported at the moment. We are also planning several large enhancements to our site including added focus on social aspects of our community."

Spring is on its way and soon enough it will be time to change our closets over...out with the old and in with the new, but before you shop, visit Dig 'N' Swap!  A fantastic concept that gives new meaning to one woman's trash is another woman's treasure!  http://www.dignswap.com

Graphic Designers Windproof Hats

| | Comments (1)
11capsurz-luv2shop.jpgMari Baskin and Eric Neumann met in person for the first time in 1984, almost ten years after Mari's first exposure to Eric's work, work that influenced continued study of her first love: art and design.

Mari finished high school (Evanston, IL) and college (University of Illinois, BFA in Industrial Design), hoping to one day work on the same kind of cool stuff designed by Eric (Elmhurst, IL and Chicago Academy of Fine Arts) while her father had been a customer of the company for which Eric worked. Herein lies the prior exposure to Eric's early work although the two did not meet for many years.

Mari unknowingly followed a similar professional path to Eric's: interviews at the same Chicago-based design firms (discovering later that Eric had actually worked there), brief stints working in the furniture business (both arising out of necessity), and after three years designing trade show exhibits, Mari answered a 1984 Help Wanted ad in the Chicago Tribune that landed her at the same packaging design company that Eric worked.

Minimal collaboration at first - Mari had catching up to do and company management seemed keen on keeping Eric's ingenuity sequestered. But as two people whose minds often focus as one, in 1988 Mari and Eric formed Para Designers (think a "pair of designers").

6capsurz-how-to.jpgFrom structures to graphics, products to packaging, displays, branding and campaigns, Para Designers provides clients the personal approach of a small and experienced design firm, the methodical analysis of strategic thinkers (it was thirteen years before the partners married), and the passionate ability to push the limits of imagination.

Alongside the (public) client work flowed the (private) development of product ideas: stacks and stacks of sketches, folders and boxes filled with prototypes, ideas and dreams for that next better mousetrap. First attributed to Plato, necessity is the mother of invention, but in the area of consumer product design, there's a good deal of consideration to practical manufacturing and viable marketing. Their idea for Capsurz® was born at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in March 2000.

While aboard the Navy-operated launch for the trip to the USS Arizona Memorial, Mari and Eric watched as strong winds blew the hat off the head of a fellow visitor, landing it directly over the remains of the USS Arizona in full view of a sign prohibiting throwing anything into the water. The hat was out of reach and the helplessness felt by all aboard was visible: although unintentional, the final resting place for so many sailors had been desecrated. As product designers, Mari and Eric recognized a need. And as tourists in windy Hawaii, they continued to be bombarded with the inability to keep a cap on. Within several weeks, the patent process for Capsurz®, the only cap and hat retainer that windproofs while it accessorizes, was underway.

Anglers, boaters, sailors, convertible drivers, horseback riders, skiers, rollercoaster enthusiasts, outdoor recreationalists of every kind who wear hats know the need to keep their hat on. And hat wearers of every kind know their preference for self-expression. Capsurz® accomplishes both: it's functional and fashionable. The colors and motifs are unlimited. Plus, Capsurz® can be customized with a graphic message/logo. It's the first utilitarian cap and hat jewelry!

2MariBaskin.jpgWhether the design project is work-for-hire or for personal use, Para Designers considers the best part of the process to be the confirmation of desirability. Clients are happy? Grrreat! Consumers are buying? Double grreat! The best solution for the time does not stop Mari and Eric from continuing the search for the next better mousetrap.

With the 2008 eTail launch of www.capsurz.com , Mari and Eric have expanded Para Designers' endeavors. Ongoing wholesale partnerships continue to grow and new products are scheduled for rollout 3rdQ 2009. Some of the new items are cap-related, some relate to Mari and Eric's vast experience designing products made of paper, an ecofriendly, sustainable material whose advantages are regaining popularity. Focusing on "reduce, reuse, recycle" as a recurrent product theme, even Capsurz®, by keeping caps on heads, is the preeminent soldier in the war on hat litter, embracing the personal economics of saving your favorite hat!

No More Embarrassing Blouse Gaps

| | Comments (1)
Peek-A-Boob-Display-2.jpgPeek-A-Boob!  I love this name and this product.  We've all experienced "falling out" of our blouse and Ashley Rivero was discovered the perfect secret to preventing this embarrassing situation.  I love shopping and buying new things! I was sick and tired of The Blouse Gap and pulling out the good old safety pin!

I just love the fact that something so simple, Peek-A-Boob Strips, can take care of a life time of fashion faux pas! I wish I would have thought of it sooner!!! My favorite experience by far, would be just this week I was given the opportunity to donate Peek-A-Boob for the American Music Awards, gift bags!

I'm working on expanding the Peek-A-Boob line.  We now offer refills, and soon Peek-A-Boob sleepwear will be hitting the market!  I have something else up my sleeve... but I'll keep that to myself, for now!

isABelt Fixes Pants Problems

| | Comments (0)
4x4_SML-SINGLE-CIRCLE-with-.jpgisABelt is owned and operated by three sisters (Lori, Elise and Leslie Wilkins)..turned entrepreneurs. These three amazing women are staking their claim in the fashion world with the creation of the isABelt!  They currently have two lines..isABelt, hisABelt with more to come.  The isABelt was the brainchild of Leslie Wilkins who was sick and tired of seeing her friends wearing these fabulous outfits or jeans and constantly tugging and pulling..and isABelt was born.

Our inspiration is drawn through our daily lives.  We think of Fashion "fix-it" needs, personal fashion issues, kids styling needs or any other great things that come to mind or effect us.  We got the idea to do a Breast Cancer Awareness isABelt because, breast cancer has touch all our lives personally as my sister (partner) Leslie Wilkins, mother-in law is a breast cancer survivor and myself, I have a sister-in-law that has survived breast cancer that was diagnosed when she was only 35 and caused her to become sterile and has survived two recurrences since.  Also, we (myself and my other sister (partner) Lori Wilkins) have many friends that are survivors.  So for isABelt, making the isABelt BCA was personal so that we can be part of the cure....

Our isABelt has taken the public by storm.  We are overwhelmed with the success and the feedback on our product.  We have just produced the hisABelt (not yet announced) geared towards him, thicker and slightly easier to adjust and we have an amazing product in production!!!!!  hisABelt has finally arrived!  Keep your pants up the "hisABelt" way--

isABelt, a lightweight, flat, 1/2" wide belt that will support your pants with no bulky hardware.  The isABelt allows you to discretely wear a belt when you don't want, or need the added weight of a belt or belt buckle.  Say goodbye to "Belt Bulk" and "Plumbers Butt" The entire isABelt experience has been greatBringing the three sisters together on an ongoing basis and seeing the success we can have together.

What are their plans for the future?  To build brand awareness and loyalty and continue to grow and introduce more and more great products.

isABelt is available online at http://www.isABelt.com and in more than 350 retailers across the US, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean.
