Most of us think we are protected when not in direct sunlight— such as driving in your car to work or sitting next to a window on a train—yet, you are still being exposed to UV damage. This is commonly known as Secondary UV exposure. Marina Peredo, MD, founder of Marina I. Peredo Dermatology and Spatique Medical Spa in Smithtown, NY offers her knowledge about protecting yourself and your loved ones from Secondary UV Exposure.
“Secondary UV Exposure occurs where you least expect it,” Peredo says. In the shade, on cloudy days, indoors, as well as exposure to sunlight during winter months can all be affiliated with Secondary UV Exposure. If you live close to the equator or in the mountains (10% increase of UV radiation for each 1,000 feet increased altitude), you are a top candidate for Secondary UV Exposure.
Certain medications, such as antibiotics cause heightened sensitivity to the sun (photosensitivity), so in order to avoid sun-damage, make sure to double check with your doctor about your medications, then you can avoid the rays if necessary.
Cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels or laser resurfacing can intensify your sensitivity to the sun. Make sure you are aware of all sensitivities that your skin may have by consulting your dermatologist.
As far as genetics, this is not something we can change. Fair skin, freckles, family history of skin cancers, multiple irregular moles, sever sunburns before age 18— are all risk factors for sun damage and skin cancers.
Just remember, no matter where you are—the sun is always there, so wear your SPF daily. Doctor’s orders!
