The sun is starting to come out, which means two things - we’re tempted to tan and a natural spotlight is showcasing our skin for all to see. Both are reasons to keep healthy skin throughout this upcoming summer. If you want to tan with that SPF 5 tanning oil and eat popsicles, I come bearing bad news. This combination, while enticing, will lead to unhealthy skin in the short term and long term. However, with a few tips you can give your skin a healthy glow these next few months and in the long run.
#1 Maintain a Healthy Diet
I’m not here to tell you to never have dessert and only eat leafy greens. However, I am here to say that the more candy, junk food, and sugary foods you consume, the worse your skin will look as a result. Stay close to foods that promote the health of your skin, such as green tea, kale, and almond milk. A freeze pop on a hot day is okay once in a while, but don’t make it a habit.
#2 Use Sun Protection
Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats - whatever you may choose, protect yourself! We all want to be tan, but I ensure that it will come naturally with the warm weather even if you wear sunscreen. Contrary to common myths, wearing sunscreen does not inhibit your body’s ability to tan, just burn. In the end, wearing sun protection can only help, never hurt.
#3 Clean Your Skin
Even if you think you have the best skin in the world, you should still be washing your face once or twice daily. The great skin you have in your young adult years won’t be there forever, so it is important to keep it as healthy as possible. Warm water is best when cleansing yourself, and make sure to get a face and body wash that works well with your skin type.
#4 Avoid Unhealthy Habits
Smoking and drinking can hurt your health in many ways, and hurting your skin is one of them. The more you partake in these activities, the worse your skin will be in both the short and long run. The best idea is to rid yourself of these in general; however, if this is difficult, at least try to minimize your use of them.
#5 Be Happy
Being happy can improve my skin? Why yes, it can. Minimizing stress leads to reduced acne and early wrinkle formation, among other benefits. Make sure to relax once in a while, surround yourself with happy people and activities, and stress as little as possible. You’ll find that your level of happiness is shown through the glow in your skin.
Our skin is the number one perception that people have of us when they see us, so it is necessary to keep it as healthy as can be. Getting healthy skin this summer should be on the top of your priority list, along with achieving that rocking bikini body. Get ready for warm weather, fun times, and beautiful skin.
