The holidays are here and each year, as we open the seventh nutmeg scented candle, we think to ourselves…ugh, really!? After forcing a fake smile to your aunt for yet another useless present, it sits on the shelf in the back of your closet, only to be taken out next year when she visits again. Then the age-old question pops into your head “Is it acceptable to regift?” I mean someone’s going to like it…right?
It is perfectly appropriate to give another person an item that doesn’t fit you, or suit your particular needs or lifestyle. Just proceed with caution. So, here are some tips to get those useless gifts off your hands.
#1
Keep it in the original box
Don’t repackage your candle or sweater into a different bag. Keep in mind the receiver may love it but might want to return it for another size or color without telling you.
#2
Regift away from the your circle of friends
In a perfect world, the person that would most love your gift and put it to good use would live in another city or state. This will eliminate the constant worry that the original gift giver finds out, which would be a huge party foul.
#3
Don’t try out the product
A new gift is better than giving something that you have already worn or used. If you try the gift out and decide it’s not for you, the better thing to do would be honest and offer it to another person by saying, “I love this perfume but it’s just not my scent. It reminds me of you, so I’d like for you to have it.”
#4
Give with good intention
If you are confident that your friend or family member will appreciate the gift, by all means give it. This is not an excuse to avoid shopping fort the holidays. Wrap it beautifully and be sure to include a pretty card.
While the adage “one mans trash is another mans treasure” may hold true, if you find the gift to be used, old, or ugly, don’t pass it on to someone you care about. If it’s something that perhaps is still good, just not worthy of being worn on your cousin, donate it to a non-profit organization that can repurpose it.
Follow these simple steps, and you can easily get away with regifting some of those duplicates or useless holiday presents!
