Summer Styling Tips
Let’s face it, dressing professionally in the summer can be a challenge (especially if you live in sunny/hot Austin Texas). There are heat waves and sporadic rainstorms all while your office AC is always blasting. But remain cool. I’m here to hopefully help. As president and creative director of a marketing and design agency, The MOD Studio, I pair my creative freedom with a chic, polished and professional style (even on the muggiest of dog days…).
#1 Location Location Location.
Know your audience. Creatives have freedom to be funky but be sure that it’s done in a polished way. Pitching to a client? Wear that confidence-boosting blouse. Internal meeting with your boss? Remember the watch they complimented a few weeks back. You’ll walk in every day looking prepared, thoughtful and a step ahead of the rest.
#2 Lay(er) Up on the Job
I’m talking layers. Keep them neutral, clean-cut and presentable. Store a sweater or jacket at your desk. Wear pieces that allow you to adjust to unpredictable weather and circumstances. A beige romper, lightweight jacket and sandals with a little heel can work wonders on a summer day.
#3 Element of Surprise
Be expressive! Wear shorts but dress them up with a flowy top and a cropped jacket. Rock a statement necklace with a minimal outfit. Elevate the look with nude heels. Add a pop of color with your nails. Whatever you do, don’t be boring. I craft outfits I can wear straight to a business dinner or happy hour.
#4 Play with Textures
Treat your style to interesting combinations. If you are going to wear all white, think eyelet top with slim distressed jeans and a neutral leather bag for the ultimate monochromatic vibe. These subtle notes will keep a potentially dull outfit imaginative and unique.
#5 Fresh Face
Even the most polished fashion can be messy if your hair and makeup don’t compliment the look. One perk to the summer is pulling off a fresh face. Embrace it. If you have no time, gloss on a coat of lipstick to bring everything together.
#6 Perfect Your Go-To
It’s important to have an outfit you ALWAYS feel fabulous in. When I sense an early morning panic, I ditch the stress and put on a pair of skinny jeans, chic wedges, and a cropped jacket. Another ‘must’? A little mascara and highlighter. Effortless chic, check!
The key is to remain professional, creative and comfortable. Find the healthy medium to being yourself and charming the people around you. For more insight on expressing success, follow Maria Orozova at @mariaborozova and her agency at @themodstudio. Cheers! xo
