With only 24 hours in the day, it can be challenging to find that push to go to the gym or take a walk after dinner. If only there was a magical way to sneak in exercise - wait a second, there is! Exercise means something different to everyone - maybe it’s that extra boost of confidence when you look in the mirror or attaining some muscle tone and definition. Whatever it may mean to you, the benefits extend to better sleep, muscle function, and mental focus. Exercise throughout the day is possible even for the most hectic schedules, no matter what your day might look like.
START BRIGHT AND EARLY
As difficult as it may be, setting aside 10-15 minutes in the morning can make a huge difference. Set a personal goal for yourself, starting as small as 15 reps or as large as 50 reps or more. Sit-ups or push-ups are great for a morning exercise, and also give you an extra boost of energy first thing in the morning! However, whether you choose sit-ups or jumping jacks, starting your day off with some exercise will give you a positive morning boost.
TAKE THE FARTHER PARKING SPOT
This truly works and I’m sure you’ve heard it before. Instead of taking a long walk at night, parking in a farther spot gives you a few mini-walks a day. It can be hard to convince yourself to take a walk after working a full day. This way, you grab those extra steps without feeling so drained. You even can save a few minutes on trying to grab that front row parking spot!
TAKE THE STAIRS INSTEAD OF THE ELEVATOR
Taking the stairs allows you to get a little more intense exercise in, and still won’t make you feel inconvenienced. It may take a few extra minutes than normal, so leaving a few minutes early is always a good idea. Minor inefficiency can provide opportunities for you to squeeze in a few extra minutes of some activity. Even if you have to run out to your car during work or run an errand for your boss - use the stairs! Over time you won’t even have to convince yourself and it will become habit.
TAKE AN EXTRA TRIP WHENEVER POSSIBLE
This comes full circle with your parking spots and taking the stairs. However, don’t limit yourself to just the obvious! If you work a desk job, only fill up your water bottle half way so you make frequent walks to refill it. Instead of sending out emails or phone calls at work, walk to your co-workers office or cubicle and relay your message. You can even start parking across the street at work to get a few extra steps. No matter how big or small, taking a few extra trips will make a difference.
START A NEW HOBBY
This can range from taking a dance class you’ve always wanted to take, to planting a few flowers outside and starting a garden. Getting involved in a hobby is a non-conventional form of exercise, but for some, it can be just as effective as spending time at the gym. Activity that results in a routine is always a plus! This is a great opportunity to do something you’ve always been too busy to do.
Being active every day is way easier than it seems, no matter what method you use. These quick ways to sneak in exercise provide many options for the busybody. Not everyone’s schedule works the same, but a little adjustment will prove to be beneficial. The benefits of physical exercise go beyond self-confidence and muscle function and are worth discovering. Always remember why you want to be healthy and remember that consistency is key to a healthy lifestyle.
