Every year, I “spring clean” and try to declutter my closet. And each year, I get rid of zero clothing. I want to throw out those camo leggings I wore three Halloweens ago, but what if there’s a themed party in the future that I’ll need them for? I want to get rid of those jeans that are out of style, but what if I need an old pair for something? Each article of clothing that I consider putting in the trash pile gets thrown right back in my closet with “just in case” as reasoning.
Why Declutter?

#1 You Can’t Find Anything
Everyone fears getting rid of something only to realize they actually did need it, even if that time happens to be 5 years later. Keeping clothing leaves us with a sense of security. We feel safe because we know that no matter what event we’re going to, there’s probably an outfit somewhere in there that will be acceptable. But this mentality completely defeats the purpose of cleaning in the first place. The more you keep, the harder it is to find these things when you do end up needing them. When you finally need those camo leggings, you won’t be able to find them in the clutter that has become your closet!
#2 Your Life Is Cluttered
People say you are what you eat, I say you are what your closet looks like. Clutter in your closet will translate to clutter in your life. Soon, not only will your closet be a mess of things you don’t need, but so will your email, your kitchen, and many other aspects of your life. If you feel bad throwing things out, donate them! It’s a great way to make someone else happy while improving your life - one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure.
#3 You Have Nothing to Wear
In the wise words of Idina Menzel in Frozen - Let it go! People will laugh when you say you have “nothing to wear” with a closet full of clothes, but if all that clothing is outdated this is more than true. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, you probably will never wear it again. And if you have to second guess yourself, wondering “what if” you’ll need it, it’s time to let it go.
Spring is just around the corner, so remember when you start to clean and reorganize that you don’t need those camo leggings and you definitely don’t need last season’s jeans.I ensure you it will leave you feeling refreshed and like a new person. From now on, our motto to live by is “declutter your closet, declutter your life.”
