Feng Shui is not a method strictly for yoga enthusiasts or the spiritual. Feng Shui is effective and the modern girl like me and you could use some of it in our busy lives! Do you walk into your living room and feel a little less than enthused? Does walking into your bedroom give you anxiety? Well it may not be JUST that pile of clothes on your floor giving you anxiety, you know the ones you threw all over because you didn’t have ANYTHING to wear out last weekend? I’ve been there! Although I can’t help you with that pile, I can help you feel good vibes throughout your humble abode with the power of Feng Shui! I will break it down nice and easy for you without rattling on about all the meanings and secrets behind everything. To be honest reading about it can be exhausting but the power of a well-arranged room can seriously boost your mood and your overall happiness, so stay with me!
The Living Room
The living room is most likely the biggest area in your apartment/house and therefore the most important! If you can arrange the room using these tips you will be well on your way to feeling the positive energy. Remember, we aren’t worried about decorating right now, we are concerned with the positioning of the furniture in the room.
Take a look at where your couch is now… is it as far away from the entrance(s) as possible? If not, it’s time to slide that baby over! You want to sit the couch against the wall furthest away from the rooms entries. Positioning the couch against the wall will add a feeling of comfort and security to the room.
If you have additional seating, such as chairs or a love seat, you want to position them (in relation to your couch) in a way that would be favorable for conversation. You don’t want your guests to face away from you, that will make for an uncomfortable environment!
In a perfect setting you would have a variety of shapes to allow energy to flow easily throughout the room! For example if you have a round coffee table add in a square ottoman or square end tables and vice versa. It sounds crazy that this works but trust me you will feel more balance in your home and with your self.
The Bedroom
Chances are you have a roommate (or two or three) so while you can’t arrange their room you can arrange yours! If you have the apartment or house to yourself, the same rules apply for each bedroom so read on!
The first and most important step is to DECLUTTER! If something does not HAVE to be visible put it where it belongs instead. Things that should stay out for example are lamps, alarm clocks, picture frames, etc.
We are going to take it a step further, declutter UNDER your bed. Yes you heard me right, dig out all that junk you shoved under there! You can leave the storage boxes filled with your winter clothes but other than that, the clutter needs to be tossed or needs to be stored elsewhere! Shoving everything under your bed in an unorganized frenzy is causing negative energy in your life and your fabulous self does NOT have time to be bogged down with negativity! Your bedroom is a place to relax and refresh yourself to prepare for the next busy day.
Your bed (just like your couch) needs to be against the wall furthest away from the door. If you can you need to leave space on both sides of the bed! This helps energy to flow naturally. You want to face the end of the bed when you walk into the room.
It’s all about balance remember so if you have one night stand you should have a matching one on the other side. If you are pressed for room and need a nightstand be sure to position the other side (the one lacking a nightstand) of your bed against the wall. Try to mix shapes together, if you have a rounded headboard on your bed add square nightstands. If you have round nightstands hang a square mirror, etc.
Don’t forget about the closet, declutter declutter DECLUTTER! Your bedroom is a place of refuge not a place of chaos. You do not want to feel burdened when you open up your closet.
The Kitchen and Bathroom
These rooms usually don’t have many opportunities for rearranging, most everything is laid out already! If you feel like the energy in these rooms could be better try decorating with calm colors and making sure the décor is consistent throughout the room!
