Business is a Journey, Not a Destination
I did it. I had completed my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, been hired at one of the top hospitals in the country, had become proficient in treating the most complex cases, and thrived in all specialty areas in my field. 7 years of focused schooling, endless study hours, the best internships and ‘starter jobs’ I could find to climb my way up and here I was. I had completed the highest career goal I had set for myself. At age 27.
Most women who reach this point are elated to settle in for the long haul; enjoying the comfort of predictability while they shift their focus from building their career to starting a family. However, this achievement did not have that effect on me. Instead of relaxing into my final destination I was irritated with the wonderment of ‘Where do I go from here?’
Thus is the career trap for us creators, explorers, and seekers. The path of knowledge, skill acquisition and self-development is not one that ties up in a neat bow. Meeting your goals, without the possibility of more forward momentum, creates an uncomfortable rub. Like a dress that is two sizes too small, you squirm and fidget constantly, pulling at the edges hoping to find some space left to grow into.
The way I saw it I had two choices – I could continue with this friction of the finish line or I could create a new path for myself. So onward I went. Initially, I was discouraged to find that my advanced (and very specific) studies didn’t translate well into other fields. It seemed that a career change into another already mapped out path wasn’t readily available.
I chose instead to add ‘side jobs’ based on activities and alternative systems that I loved. I began with teaching yoga on the weekends. I led meditation groups. I discovered energy work and began to provide bodywork sessions. I became a life coach using the tools I learned in each system. I moved away from the brick-and-mortar structure and started to hold on-line programs. Those lead to invitations for me to travel for in-person workshops and events internationally. On and on the path unfolded before me. Each choice I made and every action I took lead to a new opening – sometimes very surprising ones.
If someone had told me 10 years ago that I would be running my own business, publishing my first book and facilitating classes/life coaching sessions to an international market I would have told them they were nuts. My mind would have stopped me dead in my tracks with the paralyzing how-to’s and what does that look like?
Your Journey is Yours to Create
Truth be told we never know where we are going to end up. All we can do is set targets for ourselves and have the courage to not only to meet them but leap beyond them. The question of ‘Where do I go from here?’ doesn’t have to be a friction or a stopping point. It also doesn’t have to be answered concisely, in advance or with a logical footpath. The path may zig and zag; it may take you to unexpected places and through many detours but it is leading somewhere. And in the end it’s not about the destination but the journey, which is yours to create, step by step.
