The pain of being a woman can be described in two words – razor bumps. When it comes to shaving, there is nothing more difficult than achieving a hairless and baby smooth bikini zone. Whether it be waxing, shaving, or laser hair removal, we all want it to turn out perfect. Whatever your personal preference, here are a few tips on each.
How to Achieve the Perfect Bikini Zone
Shaving
Focus on your skin type. Learn how your skin reacts to shaving. If you’re one of the luckier ones who doesn’t get horrible razor bumps, you can moisturize for a few days for more healthy and beautiful skin. If you’re a bit unluckier, buy an exfoliating loofah and use it a few times a week along with moisturizing often. This reduces the chance of ingrown hairs and leaves you feeling and looking better than ever.
Go slow. Irritation is often caused by shaving too fast. Shaving fast causes friction, which leads to bumps, redness, and ingrown hairs. Be patient and slide the razor down slowly but firmly to reduce irritation.
Break out a new razor, often. A fresh razor is the key to a clean and healthy shave. If you shave often, switch it out every few weeks. This little switch will lead to great results.
Laser Hair Removal
Shave the day before or the morning of. A fresh shave helps the laser locate the follicles. Use a clean, new razor to get rid of bacteria and get the most out of your laser treatment.
Avoid coffee. Caffeine may increase sensitivity, so avoid it right before a treatment to increase your comfortability.
Be rested and hydrated. If you’re not, your pain receptors will be more sensitive.
Ask your technician to try at different paces. Don’t be afraid to be honest with your technician if you’re in pain or want to slow down. This treatment is for you and should be enjoyable, not uncomfortable.
Avoid tanning. Exposing your skin to the sun or fake tanning can increase irritation and make the next session more painful – avoid it at all costs.
Waxing
Prep your skin. Moisturization and exfoliation are important, so make sure you do it for at least a week before your wax. This causes the wax to be less painful and your skin to stretch easier, leading to a more relaxed wax.
Find the right type for you. Not all bikini zones like the same type of wax – your skin may react differently to hard wax than your friends.Hard wax is usually a honey color and is peeled by the technician using her hand, as opposed to the paper strips used to remove soft wax. Many people will tell you that hard wax is preferable and better for you but go with the option that leaves you the happiest.
Schedule around your period. Right before and during your period, your skin is much more sensitive. While most technicians don’t mind if you wear a tampon, you will be in more pain scheduling during menstruation.
Grow out your hair. If it’s not long enough, you’re wasting your money because it won’t be effective and may not catch all the hairs. A rule of thumb is growing it out for about two weeks, or till it’s around ¼ of an inch.
Don’t shave in between. Shaving will ruin the positive benefits of waxing. If you shave, your hair will grow back thicker, faster, and darker. Plucking a few hairs is okay, but avoid shaving at all costs.
The bikini zone isn’t the greatest part of being a girl, but if you learn what method works best for you, maintaining a perfect zone isn’t that bad! Learn to love your body and your skin, and try out new types of hair removal if one isn’t working. Trial and error until you find the right method is the key to having a beautiful and smooth bikini zone.
