Mastering your jaw-dropping pool party look is all about paying equal attention to each inch of your person – from its head all the way to its toes. That hard-earned body and a new suit is nothing if contrasted with smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, and coarse hair. With factors such as the hot sun and the high probability of getting pushed into the water, pool parties will force you to take extra beauty precautions so that you can focus on enjoying your poolside day with friends. Here are some pool party beauty tips to keep you looking your best – wet or dry!
Clean Skin
Ever notice that when you exercise in face makeup, you break out right after? This is because sweating opens up your pores, thus allowing your makeup to get clogged in them. Ultimately, this will leave you with… some serious regrets. It is almost inevitable that you will sweat at a pool party, so it is super important to focus on your skincare routine in the days leading up to the event. You will also want to make sure to incorporate a blemish control body scrub into your skincare routine as the last thing you want is for blemishes on your back to distract from your bangin’ bathing suit.
Healthy Glowing Skin
When baring it all in your bathing suit, you’ll want heads to turn to beautifully glowing skin rather than someone who looks like they’ve been trapped indoors for the past 365 days. Plan in advance so that you can get a professional spray tan before your day by the pool. If you’re crunched for time, self-tanning creams, mousses, gels or sprays work just as well! If you find yourself going with the latter of these two, here are some helpful tips for self-tanning rookies:
- Mousses are probably the easiest to rub in; however, sprays will easily reach every area
- Pick the shade based on your skin tone, NOT your goal skin tone
- Shave, get a mani-pedi, wax, etc. BEFORE you self-tan so it does not get removed
- Go from the bottom up when applying so that you do not leave strange marks from bending over
- Constantly wash your hands throughout the application so that you are not left with orange-colored palms
- At your joints (where self-tanner tends to get absorbed more than the rest of the body), dilute the product by lightly applying it with a damp towel or by immediately rubbing in a little bit of lotion on top of the self-tanner
Note: This does not excuse you from applying sunscreen every day on top of this!
Light and Protective Face Makeup
Using as few products as possible while getting the job done is the name of the game for a pool party makeup look. Wearing foundation is probably not the best move for this occasion; it will easily clog your pores, turn cakey, or come off with sweat and in the water. Tinted moisturizer with at least 30 SPF or CC cream will easily absorb into your skin and feel like nothing is there.
Waterproof Eyeliner and Mascara
Skip the eyeshadow for today. Instead, take advantage of summer’s vibrance with a boldly colored, waterproof eyeliner. Try out a cobalt blue, turquoise, eggplant, or olive green colored eyeliner to create the perfect cat-eye, or apply it on your waterline. Amp up your eyes with waterproof mascara on both your top and bottom lashes.
Long-lasting Lips
Lip gloss will be a bother to keep reapplying, plus lipstick will just end up being a big mess. The best idea would be to find a product with a lip stain on one end, and a tinted lip balm on the other to keep your lips moisturized. You won’t have to worry about it coming off and it will bring together your whole face. If you decided to go bold with the eyeliner, stick to a color similar to your natural lip color. If you decided to play it safe with the eyes, draw attention to your lips with corals, pinks, oranges, and reds.
Care for the Hair
What better sight than smooth, shiny hair that glistens in the sun? You can achieve this by preparing your hair in advance with the jack of all trades product – coconut oil. Just apply a small amount of warmed coconut oil to the lower half of your wet hair and allow it to soak in for approximately 10 minutes. Upon arrival at the pool, spray your hair with some UV-protectant hair spray. Two of my favorite pool party hairdos are the effortless side braid or pulled back hair in a knotted headband.
Polished Nails + Summer = Perfect Match
Mani-pedis and pool parties go together like peanut butter and jelly. If possible, opt for gel nails, which better withstands chlorine, water, and the sun. You will also want to make sure that your feet are rid of all visible dry patches or dead skin. If you are not able to get a pedicure, a foot file at home will do just the trick.
BONUS Tip: Blotting sheets will be your best friend under the summer sun.
Following some beauty tips for mastering your pool party look does not make you a diva, but it sure as heck will make you look better than everyone else there (#sorrynotsorry). In all seriousness, it is not only about how you look, but it is also about protecting your body while outdoors for an extended period of time. Lastly, following these beauty tips will guarantee less of the beauty maintenance that would have diverted your focus from having a good time. Get ready and let the party begin!
