Someone once said that it is better to be happy in leggings than unhappy in jeans. I would have to agree, but only in certain circumstances. Although leggings are arguably the most comfortable yet still flattering choice of bottoms, it is easy to go wrong wearing them. Unfortunately, they are not completely interchangeable with jeans or other types of pants. There are rules to wearing them. If you follow these suggestions, you can definitely pull off wearing leggings as pants and look good while doing it!
Tips to Wearing Leggings
First of all, see-through leggings are never a good idea. Make sure that when you decide to purchase a pair, you try them on and test that they aren’t sheer. This is the biggest mistake women make when wearing leggings. It’s also important to consider what the rest of your outfit you plan on wearing looks like. For example, if you are going for a sporty look, you might want to choose a pair made with a moisture-wicking materials to prevent sweat stains. However, for daily activities you can choose a cozy cotton pair.
A girl always needs her go-to favorite pair of plain black leggings, but it is fun to experiment with other colors, patterns, and designs as well. Also, make sure to choose the right size, it is crucial to have a well-fitting legging. If you pick out ones that are too big, they look awkward in the front and don’t shape your legs nicely. However, wearing leggings that are too small can create love-handles and cause the material to stretch. So just find the right pair for your body and rock them after reading these recommendations.
If you’re going for a casual look:
Leggings are perfect for a relaxed vibe. If you want just want to throw on a pair of leggings, try pairing them with a workout top and running shoes if you’re comfortable. Choose a tight fitting athletic legging from somewhere like Lululemon or Athleta. When you’re running late, this outfit can make you look put together even if it only took you five minutes to change (bonus: if your hair is greasy this is the perfect opportunity for a casual pony)! By wearing workout clothes, you will also be more motivated to workout. If you’d rather have your legs be more covered up, pick a long, loose shirt and sneakers.
If you’re self-conscious about your legs or hip area:
Just because you don’t want to show off your legs does not mean you can’t wear leggings. Invest in a thick pair of leggings: they keep you warm and provide more coverage from unwanted jiggling or potential sightings of cellulite. Black is the way to go, as it is known to be slimming and goes with everything. Try pairing your leggings with oversized sweaters and boots in the fall, a popular trend every year. This relaxed look is perfect for running errands, shopping, going to class, or even just lounging. If your hip area is what concerns you, try high rise leggings for extra coverage.
If you’re going out:
A nice pair of leather leggings calls for a party or a trendy occasion. They are a chic way to wear leggings, especially with a cute top, statement necklace and booties. But if that’s not your style, black leather is so versatile you can really pair it with most anything.
If you want to draw attention to your legs:
Some people consider their legs to be one of their best features, if this is you then bright colored leggings are a must! They can liven up any outfit and are perfect for adding to darker tops in the spring or summer. Leggings with designs on them can also draw attention to your legs. Buying black pairs that have patterns or cutouts in them can ease your guilt of owning so many pairs of plain black ones.
If you want to wear jeans:
Jean-leggings/jeggings are an amazing invention. They look like jeans but are infinitely more comfortable to wear. To say the least, I am a big fan. They look great with any outfit, especially a cute top and a chunky heel. The best part about wearing jeggings? No one will even know.
There are many legging options that can be used as a replacement for jeans or other uncomfy pants. If you want to rock them, go ahead but just make sure to wear the right pair for the situation. And if you’re even unsure about how your leggings fit or how an outfit looks, check yourself out in a mirror or ask a friend if they work. If not, try a longer shirt, different pair, or another layer.
Long live wearing leggings!
